This candidate decided not to immediately go into big law from law school, despite having the opportunity to do so if she had wanted to. She instead chose a very well respected mid-sized firm to join and summered there as well. This is a unique choice that we do not see made often for candidates coming from a top law school, but she was interested in the growth of the firm that she joined and wanting to get real hands on experience. The firm did not pay market, which she of course understood in accepting the position from graduation.
While there, she got the experience she was looking for - this candidate had the opportunity to engage in trials as only a mid-level associate including being allowed the opportunity to conduct direct examination during an arbitration. She was given real oral advocacy experience at her firm where she got to stand up in court in her third year as well as take many depositions, something you do not see a lot with an associate of her years and experience. She of course, also had strong writing and briefing skills and was highly involved in discovery during her time at her firm. She did a ton of work and was extremely respected by the firm and her peers. She also had a broad range experience at the firm, working on matters including contract claims, general commercial litigation, unfair trade practices, intellectual property matters, real estate issues, and related practice areas.
This candidate came to BCG when she was in her 4th year looking to make a lateral move. She had realized that perhaps it made sense now to try to move into big law, as her pay she was receiving was not in the same line as the current Cravath market, and she was working just as hard. This is a common issue that happens in mid-sized firms, and often it can make sense to go into big law as a result. However, she received fantastic training, which is what she was looking for. New York litigation is probably one of the most competitive markets out there, it is not a ton of opportunity in big law for laterals and it is also very competitive, which is something she understood. Associates need to realize that a big law litigation search is not likely to garner dozens of interviews. So if limited to big law, the candidate as she was needs to be patient and continue to get out there.
This candidate was a real find, in my opinion, because she had wicked strong credentials, and was also a wonderful person and came off extremely intelligent and smart. Getting her in the door would be key - and with BCG's connections and understanding of the market, the candidate started to receive numerous interviews at top big law firms.
This candidate's strong litigation background, including actually having taking depositions as a third year associate and had real trial experience definitely was a strong asset for her, in addition to her strong credentials.
She finally received an offer for market pay at a strong top firm. She was interviewing at a couple of others, but realized, correctly, that she should not pass up one opportunity for the possibility of another one working out, which were much less likely at that point. The firm who made her the offer was interesting since it was also a nice mix of still mid-sized feel, but in big law, with top pay and top ability to transition to another firm or in-house if she ever decided to do that as she became more senior. Her offer was very competitive, and the firm expressed repeatedly that she got the job over many other qualified candidates. The candidate was ultimately thrilled to accept the position. She came in as a 4th year associate at market. We at BCG was so thrilled to have made this a reality for her, because we believed in her, and it is not always easy to transition from mid-sized to big law without any big law experience.
