Known as the Queen City of the South-Charlotte, North Carolina-has undergone a major transformation in the last few years to emerge as a 21st-century power city. Now a stable metropolis, Charlotte houses a prominent banking industry, the second busiest in the nation. The Federal Reserve-as well as the headquarters of Bank of America, Wachovia, and First Union-is located in Charlotte. It is young city with a lot to offer. The large law firms and banks are all located downtown, which here is called uptown, within a 10-block radius. All of the buildings are relatively new and quite beautiful. Charlotte is ranked as one of the cleanest cities in the country. The people are friendly, and it is easy to get around. New restaurants, bars, lofts, and condos are popping up every few weeks.

Most of the law firms in the city have an outstanding banking/finance practice group. For attorneys who live in New York, Chicago, and San Francisco and are looking for a place where they can buy a house and live very comfortably in a more relaxed atmosphere, while handling the same sophisticated transactions they are working on now, Charlotte is the perfect city. The doors are always flying open to speak with top-notch capital markets/finance/banking partners and associates.

Charlotte has a mix of well-established Carolina firms and smaller offices of AmLaw 50 firms that are always looking to expand. Right now, the hot practices are in banking, finance, securitization, capital markets, commercial litigation, real estate, and employment litigation. The market is competitive, but the firms are always willing to look at candidates with big-firm experience in New York, Chicago, or DC. For attorneys not involved in banking, it usually helps to have some kind of tie to the city. However, because North Carolina has reciprocity with many states, out-of-state candidates many not have to sit for the state bar. There is top talent in Charlotte, with plenty of work to keep them busy, but not too busy that they do not enjoy their lives outside of the firm.

The city boasts that it blends big-city entertainment with Southern hospitality. Truly a city of contrasts, Charlotte is both host to an impressive urban skyline and the NASCAR capital of the world. A sports fan's city, Charlotte is home to 2003 NFC Champion Carolina Panthers, the NHL's Carolina Hurricanes, and the new NBA franchise, the Charlotte Bobcats. Charlotte has two large lakes, one on each side of the city, and is less than three hours from the coast and the mountains. We have candidates every week interviewing at prestigious firms in Charlotte. There is a substantial buzz about this city, and we expect continued development.
