Ogletree Deakins Deepens Leave Management Practice in Pittsburgh, Welcomes Sheri Giger as Shareholder

Ogletree Deakins
Ogletree Deakins, one of the largest labor and employment law firms representing management, is pleased to welcome Sheri Giger to the firm’s Pittsburgh office as a shareholder. Giger joins the firm from the Pittsburgh office of Jackson Lewis, where she has practiced for more than two decades, most recently as co-leader of the firm’s Disability, Leave, and Health Management (DLHM) practice group. Giger’s arrival comes on the heels of the addition of Susan Zoeller as shareholder in the firm’s Indianapolis office, also from Jackson Lewis.

“Sheri is highly respected in the local market, and we are thrilled to add her impressive leave management experience to our team,” said Jenn Betts, office managing shareholder in Pittsburgh. “With leaves of absence requests on the rise nationally, Sheri will serve as a tremendous asset for the firm and a tireless advocate for our clients in navigating these complex issues.”

Giger focuses her practice on preventative advice and counsel, particularly in the area of leave management, covering the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), paid sick leave, and related leave statutes and policies. The scope of her practice also includes policy/handbook development (particularly for multi-state issues and compliance), reductions-in-force, background checks, Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) advice, hiring and interviewing, wage and hour, internal investigation advice, and other preventative workplace practices. She conducts extensive training on the same topics and other management issues such as performance improvement, documentation, and anti-harassment. Giger also defends charges of discrimination before federal and state agencies. Prior to entering the field of law, Sheri worked in human resources for seven years for a Fortune 500 company.

Giger is named in the “Employment Law – Management” and “Litigation – Labor and Employment” categories of The Best Lawyers in America© 2023 guide. She is a member of the Allegheny County Bar Association and serves on the Partners Board of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust. Giger earned her J.D. from the University of Pittsburgh School of Law, her M.S. in Human Resource Management from Nova Southeastern University, and two B.A. degrees from Carlow College.
