Thompson Hine is pleased to announce that leading national tax-credit lawyer Alan L. Kennard has joined the firm’s Tax and Real Estate practices in Chicago as senior counsel. He has participated in closing over $5 billion of financings over his 30-year career.

Kennard’s addition further complements the expansion earlier this year of the firm’s real estate finance capabilities with the addition of a seven-person team, including four partners (William R. Weir, David M. Lewis, Allyson J. O’Keefe and Christopher J. Diehl) to the firm’s Real Estate practice in Cleveland.

“Alan has decades of experience in facilitating complex transactions that effectively and efficiently maximize the financing and tax benefits for his clients,” said Thomas J. Callahan who leads Thompson Hine’s tax practice and also served as the Chair of the ABA Tax Section for 2019-2020. Thomas J. Coyne, the firm’s real estate practice group leader added, “it has become increasingly vital to offer highly experienced tax credit counsel to our clients as competition in the real estate market intensifies, and projects supported by tax credits continue to expand nationally. This expertise will be valuable not only for our lender side clients, but also for investor-side clients in their development projects, which typically involve an array of tax credit programs.”

Kennard specializes in innovative investment structures, including those involving new markets tax credits, historic tax credits, low-income housing tax credits and energy tax credits, as well as public finance and various other items of the capital stack such as private-public partnerships, debt, equity, grants, federal and state subsidies. He also has experience in federal income tax law, public finance, and financial derivatives. His clients include real estate developers, nonprofits, community development entities, state and local governments, financial institutions, manufacturers and healthcare providers.

His practice also includes federal and state income taxation related to limited liability companies, partnerships, corporations, S-corporations, nonprofits, real estate investment trusts, regulated investment companies, like-kind exchanges, and various debt/equity issues.

“I have worked closely with several of the partners at Thompson Hine throughout the years and have valued both the expertise in their respective practice areas as well as their client focus and dedication. I was thrilled to hear that the firm is focused on developing their tax credit practice and were proactively looking for someone with a tax slant,” said Kennard of his decision to join the firm. “Of course, being from Ohio, Thompson Hine was always in mind as a top national firm.”

Kennard has previously practiced as a Certified Public Accountant, Certified Managerial Accountant, Certified Internal Auditor and Certified Fraud Examiner, and was Certified in Financial Management.
