Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe chose small town of Wheeling over two other West Virginia cities for establishing a work center though the firm’s headquarters are in San Francisco, California. The center in Wheeling is a renovated and restored factory once owned by the Wheeling Stamping Co. The center now houses 300 employees of Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe who do administrative work and documentation work for the 1,100 attorneys of Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe stationed across the world. The center at Wheeling functions as a hub for administrative work including payroll, human resources, billing and networking.
Opening a center at Wheeling is a part of cost-cutting strategies of the law firm, though personal nostalgic reasons may have been additional incentive to choose Wheeling. The chairman and chief executive of Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe, Ralph Baxter hails originally from New Martinsvale – 40 miles south of Wheeling and also on the Ohio River.
The $13 million renovation project of the work center was made by McKinley & Associates Architects of Wheeling and Alliance Architecture of Annapolis. The director of the work center, Will Turani, who was the city manager of Wheeling a decade ago, when Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe made the deal to renovate the historic building and use it as an administrative center, holds, “We proved we had a pool of talent, the real estate costs were favorable, and we had proximity to Pittsburgh International Airport.”
