Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan has enlisted Paul Evans to help them open an office in Perth, Australia. Evans, a former partner for Freehills, spent the past six years as a state solicitor for Western Australia. The new firm for Quinn Emanuel will be in Australia’s fourth-largest populated city, set to open in April.

Evans was with Freehills for 24 years, leaving just before their merger with London-based Herbert Smith in 2012 to form Herbert Smith Freehills. Evans explained, “Having been approached by a number of law firms, I wanted to find the perfect firm to use my skills. I am confident that I now have.”

In his role as a state solicitor, Evans was responsible for civil and regulatory legal function in the western third of Australian. In his new role with Quinn Emanuel, Evans will focus on corporate law and antitrust litigation in the mining and commodities industries.

Quinn Emanuel managing and co-founding partner John Quinn said of the announcement, “Perth is the center of the Australian mining and commodities business – industries in which Australia leads the world. There is a lot of demand for arbitration and other disputes work arising from the major projects there.”

This will be the second office for Quinn Emanuel in Australia. Their first office was opened in 2013 in Sydney with Herbert Smith Freehills litigation partners Michael Mills and Michelle Fox joining their team.
