Half of Thacher Proffitt Lawyers join Sonnenschein
Half of the lawyers from the troubled US firm of Thacher Proffitt & Wood, including its managing partner Paul Tvetenstrand, have been hired by Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal. Sonnenschein scored 100 of Thacher's 195 lawyers, bringing the total number of lawyers at Sonnenschein to 800. This move comes after rumors that merger talks between Thacher and King & Spalding fell through over the weekend. Firm representatives from Sonnenschein say these hiring have dramatically increased their corporate capabilities and doubled the size of the New York office.

Selects Six Members for Partnership Committee

The partnership committee for Clifford Chance (CC) has been elected. This committee includes chair David Childs (CC managing partner), two executive partners, global practice area leaders, regional managing partners, finance director, and the firm's global director of business services. All positions become effective January 1 and run for a two-year term.

Firm-wide Salary Freeze for Dorsey & Whitney Associates and Staff
Legal blog Above the Law reports that on December 23rd a memo went out to US firm Dorsey & Whitney explaining that management has decided to freeze the salaries for Dorsey Whitney Associates for 2009. In her memo, managing partner Marianne D. Short claims that the salary freezes will continue until the economy stabilizes.
