This candidate was not the easiest to place. He went to a good but not elite law school, was an out-of-state federal magistrate clerk in a less competitive district, had no law firm experience, and was not a naturally good interviewer. Generally, it is difficult to place any law clerks without any prior law firm experience, but it is even more difficult to place a magistrate clerk, as such clerkships are not considered as prestigious as district court clerkships or federal appellate clerkships. It is also somewhat difficult to place clerks clerking for judges outside of the region they want to practice in, unless they are in extremely competitive and prestigious districts (i.e. SDNY), which this particular clerk was not.

Nevertheless, this particular candidate also had quite a few things going for him. First, he graduated college from an elite Ivy League university. Second, he obtained excellent grades at his law school, from which he received a Merit Scholarship. There, he not only excelled academically but was also an Articles Editor of the flagship law review, was awarded an award for Unsurpassed Editing of said law review, and was Director of the Law School Supreme Court Advocacy Program, through which he gained excellent appellate advocacy skills. However, he most proud of the awards he received for his kindness and congeniality in law school.

In speaking with this candidate, it was obvious that he was, in fact, an extremely nice guy and would be a great team player, which is important for litigation associates seeking to enter into private practice.
Additionally, he had strong ties to the market he sought to relocate to. His wife worked there and his in-laws lived there. It was where he and his wife intended to settle down long-term.
I was able to write a very strong cover letter for this candidate, highlighting his impressive qualities mentioned above, and, consequently, this candidate received three interviews with law firms in Boston, including an interview with a prestigious AmLaw 100 firm.
I was a bit concerned about how this candidate would handle his interviews as he did not come off as particularly confident, despite his many achievements. Therefore, we engaged in extensive interview prep before each interview to increase his confidence and prepare him as much as possible. During interview prep, I made a point of highlighting what I considered his strengths to increase his confidence and I think that helped quite a bit.
In the end, the preparation must have worked because out of his three interviews, the candidate received two offers - which is very impressive! I always recommend that candidates keep an open mind and apply to and interview with as many firms as possible so that they can receive multiple offers. Receiving multiple offers is important because it gives candidates leverage in the negotiation process. We were able to pit his offers against each other in order to secure this candidate a higher starting salary than he would have received otherwise.
This candidate ended up joining a litigation boutique in Boston that was a great fit for him and I'm confident that he will be very successful there!
