I recently worked with a lemon law and asbestos litigation attorney, and helped to place him at a lemon law boutique in Pasadena (Los Angeles area). Now, I should start off by saying that most Recruiters don't work with lemon law attorneys. Lemon law is sort of a dirty word in the legal recruiting world, much like personal injury, insurance defense and workers compensation. Most recruiters don't work with firms that focus on any of these practice areas, and most Recruiters don't bother working with these kinds of candidates as well.

The candidate was actually a referral from another lemon law attorney that I'm currently working with. The two of them were colleagues at the same plaintiff-side lemon law firm in LA, and their boss was notorious in the LA lemon law community for being a "monster". They both worked very long hours for little pay, and were miserable at the firm. I am actually still worked with the woman who referred the placed candidate to me.

This candidate's background is that he is Class of 2010 from a decent law school in LA, he attended Ithaca College in Ithaca, NY for his undergraduate studies, graduating in 1997 (so not a particularly good or well-known undergraduate school), he worked as a Public Defender after law school, and then went on to do talcum powder / asbestos litigation for three law firms in the LA area before joining his current lemon law firm. He worked on some large talcum powder cases, including managing the very first class action lawsuit against Johnson & Johnson. Most impressively, he had taken 37 jury trials to verdict, 27 of which and for which he had acted as Principal Trial Counsel. He had also won 20M in verdicts and more than 50M in negotiated settlements. So, this candidate had some very impressive first and second-chair trial experience, which is always of great value to litigation / trial firms.

I applied this candidate to only FOUR lemon law boutiques in and around the Pasadena area, as he lived in South Pasadena with his wife and children, and no longer wanted to commute to the West Side for work. I applied the candidate to the four firms on the 12th of February, and one of the four firms responded immediately and said that they were interested in setting up a meeting with my candidate. My candidate and the managing partner of the lemon law firm met the next week, and clicked very well with each other. The firm ended up giving my candidate an offer of $200K base with generous bonuses, which was exactly what he was looking for, and the candidate accepted on the 26th of February, two weeks after I had submitted him to firms.

This story goes to show that lemon law can be marketable, that first and second chair trial experience is very valuable to litigation and trial boutiques and that a candidate can get placed in as little as two weeks. I have even had candidates placed the same week that I submit them for the first time, literally within days of starting to work with the candidate. The process can take anywhere from a week to many months. So, be prepared for a very short or longer timeline with regard to your job search!
