This candidate is a fantastic example of the situations some of our candidates find themselves in. They are smart, articulate, well-credentialed, who happened to make a poor lateral move that in some way derailed their career. This is something they will readily admit. A mistake. And it is something that could happen to every one of us, and something we at BCG understand.
Attorney Unemployed Lands Top Firm in Regional Market

This candidate was an extremely impressive candidate - she had a really strong science background from top schools and had gone to a top 3 law school where she was very successful. She had an amazing background and I found her extremely interesting to talk to. She, of course, landed at a top firm, Vault top-10 to be exact, and was doing exactly what we all think we should do when we graduate. She was generally happy at her firm as well.

But then things took a turn - a senior partner in her first year retired, and she was left with uncertainty about the future. At the same time, a recruiter cold called her about a random small firm opportunity that sounded unique. This firm, we are aware of, is a tough place to work, but this was something this candidate did not know. They offered her many things, including top salary and the ability to work in a better work-life balance, and so she left her cushy top firm situation for this role. I give her a lot of credit since it was a risky move, and many times, right out of law school, we just do not know or realize how difficult it could be to come back.

Unfortunately, the firm was a really tough place to work and it was not something she was willing to put up with and she decided to leave on her own accord. This is when she reached out to us. Many other recruiters would consider this a lost cause, but I saw extreme potential in her.

More importantly, she was in a very tough competitive major market and we spoke a long time about considering options more regionally. It could make all the difference for her career to get in the door at a top firm in a more regional market, with the potential to make a move. Candidates in her position should always consider regional markets if it is an option since it can be difficult to find credentials like her, and in her major market, she is competing against people still employed at top firms.

She listened to this advice and we were able to land her a really incredible opportunity in a regional market, but the top firm in that regional market. Her salary was a surprisingly strong as well for that market. She was THRILLED. It was what she needed to get in the door, and her hope was she would like the market and remain there long term!
She has been with the firm now for a couple of months and is thriving. Congrat!
