This candidate approached a BCG recruiter in the NYC area to assist with her search - in the past, she had found recruiters were not willing to speak to her because she only had small firm experience. She read this BCG recruiter/attorney bio, who itself includes top schools and firms, but somehow felt that this recruiter would understand her search and what she was looking for. And she was right. This BCG recruiter believed in her and felt she had a really good chance of making a move if she was patient and focused.
Mid-level Small Firm Lit Associate Makes Move to Strong Mid-Sized Firm

The issue for the candidate is just generally being a litigator and wanting to move to a bigger firm in the NYC area - the litigation market can be brutal. Although there is the appearance of a lot of opportunities, when a candidate is focused only on moving to a larger firm, the amount of positions is actually quite limited. However, with BCG connections and strengths, we are consistently able to place people in the tough litigation market, and if you are a litigator thinking of making a move, BCG is a good place to land. This candidate realized this.

What was going well for this candidate, on the other hand, is she went to a top-30 law school, so had proven she had the ability to succeed and her credentials were the type of larger firm would hire and consider. She also was wonderful and personable and sweet - BCG felt confident that if we could get her in the door with firms, she would land the opportunities, with our coaching and advice in interviewing, which she was very open to as well. She was absolutely lovely to work with. Her current firm, as mentioned, was a small firm of only 4 attorneys, and she was not doing the type of work in litigation she wanted to. She was however getting really strong court experience, including deposition and appearances, which helps in a lateral search.

This candidate was diligent in her search, was broad in her search, and kept with BCG, understanding that in the litigation market, interviews are never going to be instantaneous. Ironically, as often happens, she ended up landing two interviews around the same time -serendipitous really since it allowed her to explore the two opportunities, and if she was lucky enough to land both, to make an informed decision. Here at BCG, we pride ourselves also on being able to guide people in the right direction, and will always be honest with what makes sense for them, given their career and their future goals, which may not be the same for everyone.

This candidate killed it in all her interviews - the firms loved her. One firm went to bat for her very quickly and made her an offer almost on the spot in her final interview. She was still in final stages with another firm, who amazingly of hearing of the pending offer, also turned things around quickly.

Both firms were strong mid-sized firms that are extremely well-known in the area. One was a little less known than the other, but the people and the work and the vibe there were a better fit for her. It does not always make sense to go to the firm you heard the most from. She ended up deciding on that firm, and accepted the offer (and the larger firm she turned down ended up laying off people in that office a couple of months later, which goes to show that sometimes personality and vibe can be extremely important). She made the right decision and is extremely happy at her new firm, and very valued there. It is a fantastic firm with a great group of people with approximately 60 lawyers, a big change from her 4 person firm she came from.

Great job!
