Many attorneys limit their career potential by prematurely disqualifying themselves from applying to certain law firms, often based on assumptions or superficial impressions. In this Q&A, Harrison Barnes explains how subconscious barriers—like doubts about cultural fit, prestige, or compensation—can prevent attorneys from discovering exceptional opportunities. He shares real-life stories of candidates who nearly overlooked firms that ultimately offered them transformative roles and significant salary increases. The key takeaway: attorneys should cast a wide net when applying, remain open-minded, and avoid letting preconceived notions close the door on potentially career-defining positions.
Are You Unknowingly Holding Yourself Back from the Best Law Firm Opportunities?
QUESTION
I've realized I often tell myself that I'm not the right fit for certain firms before I even apply, even though I meet all the criteria. How can attorneys overcome subconscious barriers that keep them from pursuing the best roles?
ANSWER
There are a couple of key points to consider regarding why people hold themselves back from applying to firms. Often, attorneys form opinions based on things they read—Glassdoor, Top Law Schools, BCG firm reviews—and decide a firm isn’t the right fit.

Maybe you look at the attorneys there and think they're not up to your caliber, or you look at the kind of work the firm does and judge it. However, here's the thing: every firm has different practice areas, and the type of work and experience you receive can vary significantly. So can compensation.

I worked with an attorney in Texas who earned approximately $130,000. I encouraged him to apply to a small firm in Sacramento—just eight attorneys—that didn’t even have an open position listed. They practiced general commercial litigation, which matched his background. I called the firm to discuss the opportunity and compensation, thinking they might offer around $150,000. Instead, they offered him $400,000. He never would’ve gotten that job had he not been open to me marketing him to that firm.

In another case, a woman who had worked for me at JD Journal—having previously been an attorney at Skadden—was earning about $25 an hour editing and managing writers. She had left law after a traumatic experience at her previous firm, moved to

Texas to live with her sister, and had been hesitant to return to the legal practice. I encouraged her to interview at a small California firm with six attorneys and a founder who had plenty of business. She nearly walked away from the opportunity after seeing the office, which was cluttered and outdated. She assumed they couldn't pay her even $100,000.

However, I spoke with the partner, who informed me that he would bill her at $500 an hour and split the collections 50/50. That meant she could earn up to $500,000 a year if she worked 2,000 hours—and he had the work to support it. She took the job and was stunned by the opportunity.

Situations like this occur frequently. Attorneys make judgments based on surface-level perceptions—how the firm looks, what the website says, the names of the attorneys—but none of that reflects the true potential of the opportunity. You could land at a massive, prestigious firm and end up working with a partner who’s an incredible mentor, supportive, and invested in your growth. Or you could join a small shop with unbelievable upside you never anticipated.

I also recently worked with a trusts and estates attorney from California who hadn’t even attended an accredited law school—one of those online programs with high bar failure rates. She was working hourly for $75 an hour. A solo practitioner with a million-dollar book of business wanted to retire and groom someone to take it over. He made her a serious offer. However, instead of embracing the long-term opportunity, she opted for hourly work for its flexibility. That was a huge missed opportunity.

The point is: never count yourself out before applying. Every firm has its own unique people, structures, compensation models, and opportunities. Yes, you should screen out firms that don’t match your practice area or where there are clear red flags. However, beyond that, the most effective thing you can do is apply broadly. Open yourself up to possibility.

Most people don’t. The attorney in Sacramento allowed me to market his services to a wide range of firms. That’s why he went from earning $130,000 to $400,000. That’s not unusual. When you apply to more firms, you increase your odds of finding the right cultural fit, a mentor, or someone who sees your value. You just don’t know until you try—and that's why marketing yourself broadly is essential.

About Harrison Barnes

The Architect of the Hidden Legal Job Market

For most lawyers, an attorney job search begins with public job postings, law firm websites, and job boards. Harrison Barnes knows that the best opportunities are often found elsewhere—in the hidden legal job market, where confidential firm needs, quiet practice expansions, and customized roles are never publicly advertised.

As the Founder and CEO of BCG Attorney Search, Harrison has spent more than 25 years helping attorneys access opportunities before they reach the public market. He understands that law firms often hire strategically and confidentially, especially when seeking highly marketable lateral talent, replacing underperformers, or expanding key practice areas.

Harrison’s insight into law firm recruiting comes from firsthand legal experience. He is a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law, a former federal law clerk, and a former associate at Quinn Emanuel. Early in his career, he saw that traditional legal recruiting was often reactive and overly dependent on posted openings.

To change that, Harrison built BCG Attorney Search into one of the most comprehensive legal recruiting platforms in the country. Over the past two and a half decades, he has invested heavily in proprietary law firm intelligence, attorney market data, and a nationwide recruiting team. This infrastructure helps identify legal career opportunities before they become visible to most candidates.

Harrison and his team do more than match resumes to job descriptions. They help attorneys understand their legal career options, improve their marketability, and position themselves as solutions to a law firm’s specific needs. Whether advising a junior associate, a senior associate, counsel, or a partner, Harrison focuses on aligning each attorney’s strengths with the right firm, platform, and long-term career path.

Through this approach, Harrison has helped place attorneys in thousands of law firms nationwide, from Am Law 100 firms to specialized boutiques and growing regional practices. His work has helped attorneys make career moves that many believed were impossible.

Today, Harrison Barnes is recognized as one of the legal industry’s leading recruiters and career strategists. His legal career advice, articles, webinars, podcasts, and resources such as The Legal Career Insider Substack are followed by attorneys across the country.

Harrison Barnes is the legal profession's mentor and may be the only person in your legal career who will tell you why you are not reaching your full potential and what you really need to do to grow as an attorney--regardless of how much it hurts. If you prefer truth to stagnation, growth to comfort, and actionable ideas instead of fluffy concepts, you and Harrison will get along just fine. If, however, you want to stay where you are, talk about your past successes, and feel comfortable, Harrison is not for you.

Truly great mentors are like parents, doctors, therapists, spiritual figures, and others because in order to help you they need to expose you to pain and expose your weaknesses. But suppose you act on the advice and pain created by a mentor. In that case, you will become better: a better attorney, better employees, a better boss, know where you are going, and appreciate where you have been--you will hopefully also become a happier and better person. As you learn from Harrison, he hopes he will become your mentor.
