In this Q&A, a lawyer considering a lateral move to Big Law expresses concern that their niche practice area may not align with large firm expectations. The response emphasizes that major firms typically seek specialists—not generalists—and that success in Big Law depends heavily on demonstrating focused expertise. It also explores the importance of understanding why one wants to join a large firm—whether for training, prestige, or compensation—and cautions against blindly following peer pressure or prestige-driven decisions. The answer highlights that attorneys in niche areas can thrive outside Big Law, often building highly respected and lucrative careers, and urges candidates to evaluate their long-term goals rather than defaulting to the traditional Big Law path.
Can Niche Experience Open Doors to Big Law—Or Is Specialization Only Valued in Certain Practice Areas?
QUESTION
I'd like to make a lateral move to a large firm, but I’m concerned that my experience in a niche practice area might not translate well. How should I frame my narrative during interviews to show that I have the potential to perform at the highest level, even if my background doesn’t immediately align with Big Law expectations?
ANSWER
To move to a larger law firm, you typically need to present yourself as someone who is focused and experienced in a specific practice area. Large law firms hire specialists—they don’t have openings for generalists. If your current niche doesn’t align well with Big Law needs, then it may not be the right fit for that kind of move. However, you can always expand your expertise within your niche or pivot your focus to align more closely with what those firms are seeking.

That said, most Big Law opportunities are reserved for attorneys who already have clearly defined specializations. In top markets like New York City, firms demand a high degree of focus and depth in a particular area. In smaller markets—like Missouri or Minnesota—firms tend to be more generalist because they serve smaller clients with broader legal needs. So it really depends on the market you're targeting.

But beyond that, you also need to ask yourself why you want to join Big Law. Is it about the money? The prestige? Or do you genuinely believe that working at a large firm will make you a better, more focused attorney? Because if you’re a client hiring a lawyer for a real estate finance matter, for example, you’re not going to want someone who’s a generalist—you’ll want the attorney who lives and breathes real estate finance. Clients hire specialists, not dabblers. So if you already have niche experience, that’s actually an asset.

You don’t need to be in a major law firm to be successful. Attorneys in smaller or mid-sized firms who focus on niche areas can make incredible amounts of money and build strong reputations. So again, what’s the reason for wanting to move to Big Law? The best reasons are to get that firm on your résumé and to show a pattern of upward mobility. But you need to ask yourself whether that move will really help you achieve your long-term goals.

Big law schools often push everyone toward large firms—it’s what the herd is doing. And while that path works for some, it’s not the best fit for everyone. I remember that when I was at the University of Virginia School of Law, everyone chased Big Law. But there was one guy a year ahead of me who went to work for a well-known railroad law attorney in Richmond, Virginia. Back then, you couldn’t look attorneys up online—you had to use Martindale-Hubbell books. I looked the guy up years later, and he took over the practice and became a leading authority in railroad law, publishing papers and leading organizations in that field.

He decided to specialize in something obscure while others chased prestige—and it paid off. So if your current practice area is niche but you’re good at it and it interests you, don’t be too quick to walk away from it. It may be exactly what sets you apart in the long run.

About Harrison Barnes

The Architect of the Hidden Legal Job Market

For most lawyers, an attorney job search begins with public job postings, law firm websites, and job boards. Harrison Barnes knows that the best opportunities are often found elsewhere—in the hidden legal job market, where confidential firm needs, quiet practice expansions, and customized roles are never publicly advertised.

As the Founder and CEO of BCG Attorney Search, Harrison has spent more than 25 years helping attorneys access opportunities before they reach the public market. He understands that law firms often hire strategically and confidentially, especially when seeking highly marketable lateral talent, replacing underperformers, or expanding key practice areas.

Harrison’s insight into law firm recruiting comes from firsthand legal experience. He is a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law, a former federal law clerk, and a former associate at Quinn Emanuel. Early in his career, he saw that traditional legal recruiting was often reactive and overly dependent on posted openings.

To change that, Harrison built BCG Attorney Search into one of the most comprehensive legal recruiting platforms in the country. Over the past two and a half decades, he has invested heavily in proprietary law firm intelligence, attorney market data, and a nationwide recruiting team. This infrastructure helps identify legal career opportunities before they become visible to most candidates.

Harrison and his team do more than match resumes to job descriptions. They help attorneys understand their legal career options, improve their marketability, and position themselves as solutions to a law firm’s specific needs. Whether advising a junior associate, a senior associate, counsel, or a partner, Harrison focuses on aligning each attorney’s strengths with the right firm, platform, and long-term career path.

Through this approach, Harrison has helped place attorneys in thousands of law firms nationwide, from Am Law 100 firms to specialized boutiques and growing regional practices. His work has helped attorneys make career moves that many believed were impossible.

Today, Harrison Barnes is recognized as one of the legal industry’s leading recruiters and career strategists. His legal career advice, articles, webinars, podcasts, and resources such as The Legal Career Insider Substack are followed by attorneys across the country.
