QUESTION
I understand the importance of building a niche and becoming known for something specific in order to grow a substantial book of business. But I'm currently in a generalist role at a midsize law firm that doesn't offer much flexibility. How can I realistically begin to reposition myself toward a more specialized practice area without jeopardizing my current position or alienating colleagues who rely on me for a variety of matters?

This is a great question, and honestly, one I hear a lot from attorneys in your position. The reality is, most attorneys don’t start their careers in a niche. They start as generalists, especially in midsize firms, because that’s what the firm needs, and that's fine. But if you want to grow a book of business and really stand out over time, having a niche is almost always the better strategy. The good news is, you don’t have to wait for permission from your firm to start building that.

Here’s the key: start positioning yourself as a specialist even while you're still technically a generalist. That means figuring out which area of your current work you’re most interested in—or which is most marketable—and then leaning into it. Maybe 30% of your work involves employment law, data privacy, or trust and estates. Whatever it is, you begin to present that as your primary focus. That means rewriting your resume to emphasize that practice area, even if it’s not the bulk of your work. You focus on articles, CLEs, webinars, blog posts—anything that helps build your name in that niche. That’s how people start to associate you with something specific.


I work with attorneys all the time who do this. One attorney I’m working with now splits her time between commercial litigation and Fair Credit Reporting Act work. We rewrote her resume and LinkedIn to focus exclusively on the FCRA side. We stripped out everything that didn’t fit the niche—memberships, representative cases, even skills—and now she comes across as a focused FCRA lawyer. Employers in that space instantly take notice because she looks like a true expert, even though half her time was still general litigation.

You’re not going to alienate your colleagues if you continue doing what’s assigned to you. That’s important. You still need to be a team player at your firm. But outside of the office, you have total control over how you brand yourself. The niche doesn’t have to show up in your time sheets; it just needs to show up in how you present yourself to the world.

Here’s something else to consider: clients don’t hire generalists as often. They hire experts. That’s why becoming known for something—even something very narrow—is such a big deal. A lawyer who focuses on M&A for startups, or privacy law for healthcare clients, or litigation for consumer financial services—that lawyer is much easier to market and much more likely to attract business.

So the move here isn’t to stop doing generalist work. The move is to start creating a narrative around the work that aligns with a niche. Shape the story, shape the messaging, and over time, opportunities will begin aligning with that identity. It’s subtle but very effective. You’re essentially laying the foundation for the kind of practice you want, without jeopardizing your current role.
