This Q&A discusses how candidates can build trust with recruiters and avoid self-sabotaging behaviors, such as negativity or victimhood, when discussing their career. It emphasizes the importance of framing past experiences as growth opportunities and presenting oneself as upwardly mobile. A strong recruiter will help position a candidate’s background as a natural fit for new roles, rather than simply forwarding a résumé. The conversation also challenges the notion of a “bad” job market, pointing out that many lawyers miss opportunities by not applying broadly enough. Using tools like LawCrossing and strategic outreach can dramatically improve job prospects and help candidates take control of their careers.
How Can I Build Trust with Recruiters and Stay Positive in a Tough Legal Job Market?
QUESTION
You mentioned that self-sabotaging behaviors—like adopting a victim mindset or being overly negative—can lead to lost opportunities. I'm concerned that I may have unintentionally projected this when working with recruiters in the past, perhaps by complaining too much about my current firm or expressing frustrations about the market.

How can I build trust with a recruiter if I worry that I may come across as difficult or negative? And how do I balance honesty with professionalism when sharing my career story?
ANSWER
This really depends on the type of recruiter you're working with. When I work with candidates, I’m always looking for people who appear upwardly mobile—those who’ve learned from their experiences and are ready for the next step. A good recruiter frames your background in a way that makes your current goals look like the natural result of everything you’ve done so far.

For example, I spoke yesterday with a candidate who had worked at two top law firms, including Quinn Emanuel, where he spent about five or six years. He then went in-house and gained experience doing transactional IP work—licensing, etc.—but eventually lost that job and had been unemployed for a year. I got him an interview at a law firm that focuses on transactional IP work, which is aligned with his recent experience rather than his earlier litigation background.

Now, this could be a frustrating situation. Many firms look skeptically at candidates who’ve gone in-house, assuming it means they’ve rejected the law firm model. But I didn’t frame it that way. Instead, I emphasized that he gained valuable transactional experience, recognized the limitations of in-house work, and now brings unique insights that could make him a much stronger attorney—especially at a smaller firm with lower billing rates, where he could bring in clients and have a broader impact. The story became one of growth and strategic progression, not failure.
That’s what a good recruiter does. They position you as someone who is progressing—not stagnating or retreating. If you're moving to a smaller firm, there's a strategic reason. If you're moving to a bigger firm, there's a reason for that too.

Unfortunately, I’d estimate that 98% of recruiters don't understand how to frame candidates this way. They’ll often just focus on people already at large firms and try to match them with other large firms, without telling a cohesive story. They won’t help revise your resume or position you for a clear upward trajectory.

So, to answer your question: don’t vent to your recruiter about your current firm or market frustrations. Instead, focus on how your experiences—good or bad—have shaped you into someone ready for a better opportunity. If you’ve struggled, that’s okay. Use it as rocket fuel. Show that you’ve learned and grown. That’s far more powerful than simply venting.

For example, if you dislike your current firm, that’s valuable information—it means you now know what kind of environment doesn’t work for you. That awareness can guide you toward a better fit. But market frustrations? I personally don't believe in them. There are always jobs out there. If you're not getting interviews, it often comes down to how you're marketing yourself—or whether your recruiter has the right resources to help you.

Let me give you some context: I run a site called LawCrossing, which scrapes jobs from employer websites—jobs that aren't advertised on LinkedIn or Indeed. Employers on those platforms pay thousands to advertise, so their listings get swamped with applicants. But LawCrossing lists jobs that often receive far fewer applications simply because they’re not widely promoted. It costs $25/month, and frankly, if you’re serious about finding a job, it can change your career trajectory.

Beyond that, if you’re frustrated with the market, the solution is simple: apply to more firms. You can search for every commercial litigation firm in your city—or any city—and start applying. Whether you're in New York, Oklahoma, or Buffalo, there are always firms looking for good people. You might only see 10 jobs on Indeed—but LawCrossing might show you 50 in the same area that few others are applying to.
And that’s just one tool.

Let me show you what I do for candidates through BCG. We have a massive database of active and historical job listings. If I work with a candidate, I’m not just submitting them to three or four firms—I’m submitting them to hundreds, sometimes over 1,500 firms. That’s not an exaggeration. These firms may be ranked by Vault, U.S. News, Chambers, or others—and I have systems in place to track them all. These are real openings at real firms.
Most people don’t realize the sheer volume of opportunities available. They apply to five or ten jobs, get no interviews, and assume the market is bad. But if you're applying to 1,000+ firms with a strong background, and those firms have the work, you’ll get interviews—and you’ll get offers.

Here’s the hard truth: If you’re not getting interviews, the issue isn’t the market. It’s your marketing strategy. Most recruiters won’t market you like this, and most candidates don’t market themselves this way either. That’s what I do because I know it works. And if you're doing the same kind of outreach—whether on your own or with help—you’ll see results.

So ask yourself: are you allowing yourself to be a victim of your circumstances? Or are you willing to take ownership, reframe your story, and proactively pursue the opportunities that are out there?

Because they are out there. You just need to approach the search strategically—and confidently.

About Harrison Barnes

The Architect of the Hidden Legal Job Market

For most lawyers, an attorney job search begins with public job postings, law firm websites, and job boards. Harrison Barnes knows that the best opportunities are often found elsewhere—in the hidden legal job market, where confidential firm needs, quiet practice expansions, and customized roles are never publicly advertised.

As the Founder and CEO of BCG Attorney Search, Harrison has spent more than 25 years helping attorneys access opportunities before they reach the public market. He understands that law firms often hire strategically and confidentially, especially when seeking highly marketable lateral talent, replacing underperformers, or expanding key practice areas.

Harrison’s insight into law firm recruiting comes from firsthand legal experience. He is a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law, a former federal law clerk, and a former associate at Quinn Emanuel. Early in his career, he saw that traditional legal recruiting was often reactive and overly dependent on posted openings.

To change that, Harrison built BCG Attorney Search into one of the most comprehensive legal recruiting platforms in the country. Over the past two and a half decades, he has invested heavily in proprietary law firm intelligence, attorney market data, and a nationwide recruiting team. This infrastructure helps identify legal career opportunities before they become visible to most candidates.

Harrison and his team do more than match resumes to job descriptions. They help attorneys understand their legal career options, improve their marketability, and position themselves as solutions to a law firm’s specific needs. Whether advising a junior associate, a senior associate, counsel, or a partner, Harrison focuses on aligning each attorney’s strengths with the right firm, platform, and long-term career path.

Through this approach, Harrison has helped place attorneys in thousands of law firms nationwide, from Am Law 100 firms to specialized boutiques and growing regional practices. His work has helped attorneys make career moves that many believed were impossible.

Today, Harrison Barnes is recognized as one of the legal industry’s leading recruiters and career strategists. His legal career advice, articles, webinars, podcasts, and resources such as The Legal Career Insider Substack are followed by attorneys across the country.

Harrison believes the best legal careers are built by finding doors others cannot see. Through BCG Attorney Search, he gives attorneys access to the hidden market—and helps them move toward the career they truly want.
