I believe that referrals from fellow attorneys and clients can both be effective. The decisive point with all referrals is going to be the strength of the person referring you. Typically, the more that someone knows you, the better off you're going to be when that happens. So, when it comes to networking referrals from a fellow attorney, it is effective.

In my experience, a referral from a fellow attorney is often more immediately persuasive inside the legal hiring ecosystem than a referral from a client—but only when the referring attorney has real credibility with the decision-makers and can speak to your abilities in a specific, concrete way. At the same time, a strong client referral can be just as powerful (and sometimes stronger), depending on the context and what you are trying to accomplish. The decisive factor is not the category of the referrer—it is the strength of the person referring you, how well they know you, and how much risk they are willing to take by putting their name behind yours.

Law firms are risk-managed organizations. When a partner hires you, they are staking reputation, training resources, and client relationships on the belief that you will perform. That is why attorney-to-attorney referrals can carry outsized weight: lawyers understand what “good” looks like in practice. If a respected partner says, “I’ve seen her handle dispositive motions, manage clients, and deliver under pressure—she will be productive here,” that is a language law firms trust. It reduces uncertainty. It signals you have already been vetted by someone who knows the standards.


But not all attorney referrals are equal. A weak attorney referral—“He’s a nice person” or “We went to law school together”—does very little. In fact, it can hurt if it looks like social fluff with no substance. The best attorney referrals are detailed and job-relevant: quality of writing, responsiveness, judgment, ability to run matters, client handling, business development potential, and whether you can operate at the level your résumé claims. The more senior and respected the attorney, and the more directly connected they are to the hiring group, the more weight the referral carries.

Client referrals can be extremely effective when they demonstrate something attorneys care about even more than technical competence: the ability to create and keep business. A client saying, “This attorney is the reason we stayed with the firm,” or “We trust her more than anyone,” can be a major signal—especially for partner or senior associate roles where client-facing skills matter. Clients also validate temperament, reliability, and practical problem-solving—traits that make attorneys valuable long-term.

So what should you do as a practical matter? Stop thinking in terms of “attorney versus client” and start thinking in terms of “credible advocate versus casual acquaintance.” The best referral is from someone who: (1) is respected by the people you want to influence, (2) knows your work firsthand, and (3) is willing to make a specific recommendation. Your job is to engineer specificity. When you ask for a referral, give the person the raw material: the role you want, the practice group, the key proof points, and one or two examples that demonstrate results. Make it easy for them to say something real.

Networking is not collecting names. It is building relationships strong enough that people will stake their credibility on you. That is what makes any referral effective.
