Over the years, I have seen extraordinarily talented attorneys rise quickly because they knew how to position themselves appropriately. I have also seen brilliant candidates derail their careers by refusing to make small, practical adjustments.
The following story is one of the most striking examples of how something seemingly minor can become the difference between career success and career collapse.
How One Attorney’s Career Was Derailed by a Simple Choice
A Story Every Law Firm Candidate Should Understand
Several years ago, I was sitting in my office and the most amazing candidate came across my desk.
The attorney had:
A degree in a hard science discipline from a school like CalTech or MIT
A good law school background
A first-in-his-class academic record
A job at one of the top law firms in the world
A practice area that wasn’t just desirable—it was white hot
This was the year 2000, and the demand for this particular type of attorney was through the roof.
One law firm I’d been dealing with even offered another candidate of mine (an attorney only three years out of law school) a $50,000 bonus to take an offer—something unprecedented at the time.
And yet, that candidate didn’t look 10% as good as the one whose résumé I was staring at.
The Recruiter’s Challenge in a Red-Hot Market
This stellar attorney wanted me to assist him with moving to another law firm.
At this point in history, the market was so strong that I estimated he would get interviews at every single law firm I sent him to.
But as I studied his résumé, I became nervous.
When a recruiter has an exceptionally good candidate, he or she needs to be careful because:
Law firms invest enormous resources in recruiting
Offers are expensive to extend
Rejections or declined offers frustrate hiring partners
A recruiter’s credibility is always on the line
As you can imagine, it costs law firms a lot of money to bring people in to interview.
With attorneys billing at $800 an hour or more, five or six hours of their time can easily cost a law firm $5,000.
Recruiting costs add up quickly:
Screening interviews
Multiple callback visits
Lunches and dinners
Internal hiring discussions
The cost to recruit someone up until an offer could easily be $20,000.
Credibility Is Everything in Legal Recruiting
The best recruiters typically have a tremendous amount of credibility with law firms.
If the recruiter tells a law firm to extend an offer, the law firm knows:
The offer is very likely to be accepted
The candidate is serious
The recruiter is not wasting anyone’s time
A good recruiter doesn’t allow clients to play guessing games with candidates.
This credibility is what helps candidates get offers from the best firms.
A Perfect Match… or So It Seemed
This candidate was in another part of the country, and I didn’t meet him face-to-face until weeks later.
Instead, I spoke with him extensively by phone, going through:
His goals
His needs
His career plans
His personal situation
At the time, he was also going through a divorce.
After days of discussion, I believed we had finally settled on the perfect firm for him.
It was crystal clear to me he would almost instantly get an offer from any firm he went into.
The Strange Law Firm Phenomenon: “Coyness” with Stellar Candidates
There is an unusual phenomenon I’ve noticed with law firms and the most exceptional candidates.
Had this attorney had a more average record, firms would have immediately started calling to schedule interviews.
But when someone is truly stellar, firms often hesitate.
Instead of acting eager, they become “coy.”
They suddenly don’t want to look desperate.
In my opinion, firms sometimes develop inferiority complexes with candidates who appear too exceptional.
The Sudden Rejection That Made No Sense
The firm booked the candidate for an entire day of interviews followed by dinner.
This was unusual for a first interview, since most firms begin with:
A 20–30 minute screening interview
A basic evaluation of fit
A decision on whether to proceed
The next day, I called the firm for feedback.
Late in the day, the hiring partner’s secretary returned my call.
“He wanted me to tell you we aren’t moving forward.”
“Any reason why?” I asked.
“He did not give me any reason.”
Fighting for the Candidate
For the next several days, I tracked down the hiring partner.
A really good recruiter can literally snatch candidates from the jaws of death and get them hired when they are about to be rejected.
When I finally reached him, I insisted:
“You cannot reject this guy. He is exactly what your law firm has been looking for.”
“I know,” he said.
I sold the partner for 15 minutes until he agreed to another full day of interviews.
As the conversation ended, the partner asked:
“Have you met the attorney?”
I told him no.
“You should meet him,” he said.
The Moment Everything Became Clear
It occurred to me I had never seen a picture of the candidate.
I decided to fly him to Los Angeles at my expense.
When he walked into my office, I was stunned.
He had the longest hair of any man I had ever seen.
His hair went clear down past his buttocks.
He had manipulated it with barrettes to keep it away from his eyes.
It was impossible not to notice.
The Hard Truth About Law Firm Hiring Standards
Hair is personal, and I didn’t want to offend him.
But eventually, I had to ask:
“Do you think cutting your hair may make it easier for you to get a job?”
Unfortunately, my worst fears were confirmed.
The candidate exploded:
There was no way he would cut it
He wouldn’t bow to the establishment
It was an incredibly sensitive issue
He told me it had taken him three years to grow.
What Happened Next Was Predictable—and Tragic
The candidate wanted to speak with many other firms.
We discussed at least 15 more law firms.
Over the next several weeks:
He interviewed at all of them
He was rejected from every single one
He grew angrier and angrier
His attitude deteriorated
While firms didn’t say it directly, I knew the issue was the hair.
Eventually:
No one hired him
He contemplated suicide
He dropped out of practicing law entirely
His career, as he knew it, came to an end.
The Career Lesson Every Attorney Must Learn
This person sabotaged himself.
He could have fixed everything by simply getting a haircut.
You are in charge of what happens to you.
As George Bernard Shaw wrote:
People are always blaming their circumstances…
The people who get on in this world are the people who get up and look for the circumstances they want, and if they can’t find them, make them.

Doing Whatever It Takes in Your Legal Job Search
If someone told you that unless you got a job as a bank teller within 12 months, you would be executed, you would do whatever it took.
For attorneys wondering whether to apply directly to law firms or work with recruiters, our detailed Q&A on Are Attorneys Better Off Contacting Law Firms Directly or Using Legal Recruiters in Their Search for a New Law Firm Job? explores the pros and cons of each approach.
You would:
Cut your hair
Move anywhere
Apply to 10,000 jobs
Call every manager
Lose weight
Improve your presentation
Do absolutely anything necessary
Why do so many attorneys not bring that same intensity to their legal job search?
THE LESSON
If you aren’t functioning at your highest level, then you are immobilized.
You must:
Look for the circumstances you want
Create them if you cannot find them
Make your job search an all-consuming priority
Do everything in your power to keep moving forward
The story of the man with the long hair is not really about hair. It is about immobilization. It is about refusing to take action when action is required. It is about allowing pride, fear, anger, or insecurity to stand in the way of professional success.
Law firms operate within an established set of expectations. Candidates can argue that those expectations are unfair, outdated, or overly rigid—but the reality is that they exist, and ignoring them can come at an enormous cost.
If you want to succeed in your legal career, you must be willing to do what it takes to move forward. That means presenting yourself in the strongest possible way, eliminating obstacles within your control, and approaching your job search with total commitment.
You are in charge of what happens to you.
Your career will reward you when you refuse to be immobilized.

About Harrison Barnes
The Architect of the Hidden Legal Job Market
For most lawyers, an attorney job search begins with public job postings, law firm websites, and job boards. Harrison Barnes knows that the best opportunities are often found elsewhere—in the hidden legal job market, where confidential firm needs, quiet practice expansions, and customized roles are never publicly advertised.
As the Founder and CEO of BCG Attorney Search, Harrison has spent more than 25 years helping attorneys access opportunities before they reach the public market. He understands that law firms often hire strategically and confidentially, especially when seeking highly marketable lateral talent, replacing underperformers, or expanding key practice areas.
Harrison’s insight into law firm recruiting comes from firsthand legal experience. He is a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law, a former federal law clerk, and a former associate at Quinn Emanuel. Early in his career, he saw that traditional legal recruiting was often reactive and overly dependent on posted openings.
To change that, Harrison built BCG Attorney Search into one of the most comprehensive legal recruiting platforms in the country. Over the past two and a half decades, he has invested heavily in proprietary law firm intelligence, attorney market data, and a nationwide recruiting team. This infrastructure helps identify legal career opportunities before they become visible to most candidates.
Harrison and his team do more than match resumes to job descriptions. They help attorneys understand their legal career options, improve their marketability, and position themselves as solutions to a law firm’s specific needs. Whether advising a junior associate, a senior associate, counsel, or a partner, Harrison focuses on aligning each attorney’s strengths with the right firm, platform, and long-term career path.
Through this approach, Harrison has helped place attorneys in thousands of law firms nationwide, from Am Law 100 firms to specialized boutiques and growing regional practices. His work has helped attorneys make career moves that many believed were impossible.
Today, Harrison Barnes is recognized as one of the legal industry’s leading recruiters and career strategists. His legal career advice, articles, webinars, podcasts, and resources such as The Legal Career Insider Substack are followed by attorneys across the country.
Harrison believes the best legal careers are built by finding doors others cannot see. Through BCG Attorney Search, he gives attorneys access to the hidden market—and helps them move toward the career they truly want.

Truly great mentors are like parents, doctors, therapists, spiritual figures, and others because in order to help you they need to expose you to pain and expose your weaknesses. But suppose you act on the advice and pain created by a mentor. In that case, you will become better: a better attorney, better employees, a better boss, know where you are going, and appreciate where you have been--you will hopefully also become a happier and better person. As you learn from Harrison, he hopes he will become your mentor.
