About Karen

Karen Wenzel, Recruiter for Chicago Office

Karen is a Great Lakes-based BCG recruiter who leverages her stellar background as a Big Law corporate attorney and Fortune 500 company corporate counsel to help candidates discover and actualize their potential.  She places candidates all over the Midwest, including Chicago, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Detroit, and as far west as Denver.

Karen was born and raised in Minnesota.  Throughout her school years, she excelled at both academic and creative pursuits.  Karen spent three years as an NBA dancer for the Timberwolves, and is a classical violinist – still playing in a publicly-appearing string quartet.

Karen attended St. Olaf College, where she had been awarded an academic scholarship, and where both her parents had attended.  A small sampling of Karen’s many impressive activities from these years include singing in the Chapel Choir, playing violin in the Philharmonia Orchestra, and receiving induction into Phi Beta Kappa.  She received her B.A. in English and History, with a Management Studies Concentration.  After graduation, Karen worked for two years as a merchandising analyst for Best Buy Corporate.

Intrigued by the legal aspects of her business position, Karen decided to pursue a career in law, and matriculated at the University of Minnesota Law School.  Here, Karen excelled on multiple dimensions including serving as a research assistant, as a Managing Editor of and published author in the University of Minnesota Law Review, and as a law clerk at multiple respected law firms.  After focusing her studies on corporate law, she received her J.D. with a Business Law Concentration and graduated in the top 10% of her class.

After law school, Karen joined Gray, Plant, Mooty, Mooty & Bennett in Minneapolis where she quickly made a name for herself as a corporate attorney supporting both established and emerging business clients, with a focus on private equity, mergers and acquisitions, securities and finance, and intellectual property and privacy.

Having obtained a solid understanding of the needs and workings of Big Law firms, Karen then moved in-house to 3M Company as a business attorney in the St. Paul headquarters.  After two years at 3M, Karen received an opportunity to return to Best Buy in a legal role. Joining as associate corporate counsel, she was elevated to corporate counsel after a year on the tech-transactions-focused job.

Karen loved her in-house experience, but ultimately realized that her true calling lay in fostering professional development and growth.  She joined BCG and has since become a powerhouse recruiter with a particular knack for helping candidates discern their vocations and make them a reality.   With a truly extensive network of contacts, Karen is well poised to provide her candidates with superior market knowledge and connect them with a wealth of unique opportunities.

Karen and her husband are the proud parents to a son and a daughter.  She loves working as a recruiter and is particularly appreciative of the opportunity she has each day to hear the unique stories of so many remarkable individuals.

Testimonials

I worked with Karen and thought that she was very responsive and stayed in constant communication with me so that I was aware of where we were at every step of the way. She also brought the positions to me which made finding a job much easier, even the one I was eventually placed in. I would say that BCG ranks at the top as far as recruiters go.
