December 10, 2012 - Pasadena, California - The latest jobs report released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that the legal sector added jobs for the second straight month.
The report, which was released on December 7, shows that the legal sector added 600 new jobs in October and also revised upwards the number of legal jobs added in September. Previously BLS data had indicated that around 1,000 jobs were added. Now the estimate is of 1,300 jobs being added in September.
Since the start of the year, the legal sector has added 6,000 net jobs and the industry now employs 1.1 2 million people. This is the highest figure for the industry since July 2009. Recruiters at legal recruitment firm BCG Attorney Search have also reported increases in the number of attorney job openings. The Pasadena based recruiter is currently working towards filling 3,200 positions in law firms nationwide.
The fact that law firms are doing relatively well compared to the recession hit years of 2009-10 is shown by the fact that several of the BigLaw firms are now giving out year-end bonuses. New York based Kaye Scholer has announced double bonuses for its top performing associates, while Boies Schiller & Flexner has announced a bonus scale where the bonuses top out at $250,000, cementing the firm’s reputation as being the leader and trailblazer in terms of pay.
The most in-demand area continues to be the corporate practice area with 775 openings. Intellectual Property is at second place with 592 openings while litigation, which traditionally is tied with corporate in terms of job openings is at number three with 494 jobs. Other in-demand areas are employment law, healthcare and real estate. In terms of location, California continues to be the leader with over 500 openings, while New York is second with over 400 openings.
