Job Overview:
A nationally ranked law firm is hiring an Intellectual Property Associate with 2–4 years of experience in patent preparation and prosecution to join its expanding IP team. This position offers the opportunity to be part of a collaborative practice group within a highly respected AmLaw100 firm. The ideal candidate will bring a strong technical background and USPTO admission, with the ability to contribute to both domestic and international IP portfolios. This recruitment is conducted on behalf of the law firm by a legal recruiting agency.

Location:

  • Charlotte, NC

Duties:

  • Prepare and prosecute U.S. and international patent applications

  • Draft legal opinions, including patentability, non-infringement, and invalidity analyses

  • Conduct IP due diligence reviews (preferred, but not required)

  • Work directly with inventors, engineers, and in-house counsel

  • Maintain awareness of new legal and industry developments in patent law

  • Manage client communications and coordinate with internal teams

Requirements:

  • 2–4 years of experience in patent preparation and prosecution

  • Familiarity with a broad range of technical subject matter

  • Strong client service orientation and attention to detail

  • Ability to manage time effectively and meet deadlines

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an ABA-accredited law school

  • Undergraduate degree in mechanical, electrical, or chemical engineering, or computer science (or a related technical field)

Certifications:

  • Admitted to practice in a state where the firm has an office

  • Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)

  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently
