A law firm is seeking a Patent Agent with a chemical engineering or software background for their Washington, DC office. The Patent Agent will be responsible for preparing and prosecuting patent applications before the USPTO, conducting research and analysis, and advising on various patent and IP-related matters.

 

Duties:

  • Prepare and prosecute patent applications before the USPTO
  • Conduct research, analysis, and guidance on patent and IP-related issues
  • Draft patent applications and responses to communications from the USPTO
  • Assist in due diligence matters
  • Draft responses to communications from US and foreign patent offices regarding scientific matters
  • Investigate general and specific technologies as required
  • Evaluate and report on technological aspects of inventions
  • Identify and analyze complex patent issues, proposing solutions
  • Act as a liaison between inventors and the USPTO
  • Undertake continuing education to stay current on patent prosecution issues and trends

 

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering, chemistry, software, or electrical engineering; Master’s or Ph.D. preferred
  • Licensed to practice before the USPTO
  • 2-7 years of patent prosecution experience
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Knowledge of patent documentation drafting standards
  • Familiarity with prosecution docketing programs
  • Advanced research skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

 

Skills:

  • Ability to analyze and interpret research findings
  • Familiarity with current developments and trends in relevant fields
  • Candidates should possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and be able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
