Job Overview:
A nationally respected law firm is seeking a Patent Attorney with at least 4 years of patent prosecution experience to join its expanding Intellectual Property practice. This position supports a wide range of IP matters across disciplines, with a focus on the biotechnology, pharmaceutical, and medical device sectors. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with patent attorneys, clients, and business teams on cutting-edge innovations and IP strategies.

Location:

  • Providence, RI

Duties:

  • Evaluate patentability of life sciences and related innovations

  • Prepare, draft, and file U.S. patent applications

  • Prosecute U.S. patent applications and coordinate international prosecution with foreign counsel

  • Conduct legal and technical research related to patent and IP law

  • Support IP due diligence for transactions and strategic portfolio management

  • Collaborate with internal teams and clients on intellectual property strategies

  • Serve as a liaison between departments and interact with outside counsel

Requirements:

  • Minimum 4 years of experience in patent prosecution (law firm or in-house)

  • Focused experience in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, or medical devices

  • Strong foundation in scientific and technical subject matter

  • Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with legal and business professionals

Education:

  • Ph.D. in a relevant life sciences discipline (required)

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school (for attorney candidates)

Certifications:

  • Active admission to a state bar in good standing (for attorney candidates)

  • Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (or eligible to sit for the exam)

  • Experience with mechanical or electrical patent prosecution is a plus

Skills:

  • Strong legal writing and analytical skills

  • Proficiency in scientific and technical analysis

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities

  • Collaborative mindset with attention to detail
