Job Overview

A leading law firm with national and international reach is seeking a Patent Agent with a minimum of four years of experience to support its expanding Intellectual Property practice. The role is centered on life sciences-related patent prosecution and portfolio strategy. This opportunity offers cross-disciplinary collaboration and involvement in sophisticated IP matters spanning biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, and medical devices.

Location

  • Providence, RI

Duties

  • Evaluate patentability of innovations across various technology areas

  • Prepare, draft, and file U.S. patent applications

  • Prosecute U.S. patent applications and coordinate with foreign counsel on international filings

  • Support strategic patent portfolio management and IP due diligence projects

  • Conduct legal and technical research related to patent and intellectual property matters

  • Collaborate with attorneys, clients, and internal business teams on IP strategies

  • Act as a liaison for interdepartmental initiatives and maintain regular communication with outside counsel

Requirements

  • At least 4 years of patent prosecution experience in a law firm or in-house setting

  • Focused experience in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, or medical devices

  • Strong understanding of U.S. patent law and international prosecution practices

  • Experience in mechanical or electrical patent prosecution is a plus

Education

  • Ph.D. in a relevant life sciences discipline (e.g., molecular biology, biochemistry, biomedical sciences)

Certifications

  • Registered to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), or eligible to sit for the Patent Bar

Skills

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • High attention to detail and strong organizational abilities

  • Proficiency in conducting complex legal and scientific research

  • Ability to collaborate effectively within cross-functional legal teams

  • Technologically adept and familiar with scientific subject matter
