As lead counsel for major technology clients Villarreal has a history of successful patent-related representations. In addition to being a highly experienced patent litigation and trial attorney for technology and growth enterprises, Villarreal also advises clients regarding IP transactional matters, including strategic intellectual property portfolio management and licensing. He joins Baker Botts from the Austin office of Perkins Coie, which he helped open in February 2020 and where he served as the founding office Managing Partner. Before that, he was a partner at Wilson Sonsini for over 15 years.

“Jose’s stellar credentials, leadership skills, courtroom experience, technical expertise and market knowledge make him a strategic fit for our IP Department,” said John Martin, Managing Partner of Baker Botts. “Austin is a pivotal market with robust growth in the technology industry, and Jose’s arrival will add strength on strength.“

“Jose’s reputation and legal community engagement, high-tech litigation practice, and client relationships and successes will further enhance our IP Department’s market prominence in both Texas and nationally,” said Rob Scheinfeld, Co-Chair of Baker Botts’ IP Department. “We are delighted to welcome him to the firm and to call him our partner.”

“I am excited to join Baker Botts’ market-leading IP practice,” Villarreal said. “I have worked with several of the firm’s IP lawyers throughout my career, and have seen their professional excellence, technical expertise and collaboration time and again.  I look forward to teaming with them and hitting the ground running.”

Villarreal earned his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center, where he graduated cum laude in 1997. He also received a Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering from Cornell University in 1998 and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Florida, where he graduated with high honors.
