Morgan Lewis Adds Investment Management Former In-House Counsel Lance Dial in Boston
“With more than a decade of in-house counsel experience, Lance brings an abundance of knowledge and experience in creating new products, managing operations, and understanding regulatory policy to investment managers,” said Firm Chair Jami McKeon. “Lance’s commercial experience leading client-facing business teams—coupled with our market-leading investment management practice and global platform—enhances our business savvy capabilities and service we are proud to deliver to clients.”
Lance has a deep understanding of mutual fund law and operation and is well versed in the creation of investment products. As a managing director and counsel at Wellington Management Company, he advised on subadvised exchange traded funds (ETFs) and subadvised separately managed account (SMA)/wrap programs. Earlier in his career at State Street Global Advisors (formerly SSgA), Lance led the creation of novel ETF structures, including the first master-feeder ETFs and a first-of-its-kind actively managed bank loan ETF. He also works extensively on regulatory policy matters engaging with various financial services regulators, including the US Securities and Exchange Commission, US Department of Labor, Internal Revenue Service, and US Department of Treasury.
“As we continue to see boards and executives in the funds space increasingly interested in sustainable and impact investment opportunities, Lance has first-hand involvement in developing standards for ESG investment strategies that will be an invaluable resource to clients,” added Tim Levin, leader of the firm’s Investment Management Practice. “Lance is highly regarded in the asset management industry for his substantive knowledge and ability to craft creative solutions, and we are thrilled to have him on our team.”
Lance’s arrival to Morgan Lewis follows the addition of partner Kimberly Eney, who joined the ESG and tax-exemption and nonprofits team in August. Earlier this year, the firm welcomed a four-person team resident in New York that included partners Tomer Inbar and Megan Bell, where Megan joined the ESG and Sustainability leadership team. In March 2020, the firm added a four-lawyer private investment funds team in London that included partners Oliver Rochman and Rob Mailer.
