K&L Gates Further Strengthens Intellectual Property Practice with Addition of Seasoned Litigation Partner in Chicago

Following the recent additions of its IP Agency in China, a team of intellectual property (IP) lawyers in Japan, and new IP partners in Melbourne, Portland, Orange County, Seattle, San Francisco, and Chicago, global law firm K&L Gates LLP has now added Jeffrey R. Gargano as a partner in its intellectual property litigation practice. Gargano joins K&L Gates’ Chicago office from Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP.

A first-chair trial lawyer and registered patent lawyer with three decades of experience representing clients on intellectual property disputes in U.S. federal courts and before the International Trade Commission, Gargano concentrates his practice on high-tech and pharmaceutical life sciences patent litigation, with substantial experience counseling on and litigating regulatory, patent, and antitrust matters involving the Hatch-Waxman Act. He litigates on a broad array of IP areas, assisting clients across a diverse range of technologies, from pharmaceutical compounds and formulations, drug delivery systems, medical devices and surgical procedures, and food sciences, to 3G-5G wireless telecommunications, semiconductor manufacturing, circuit protection devices, computer networks, and software and hardware, to electro-luminescent materials for flat-panel displays, water-soluble polymeric films, ecommerce, and fitness and sporting equipment.

“Many of us have known Jeff for a number of years and we are thrilled to be able to add him to our team,” stated Bob Barrett, a co-leader of K&L Gates’ intellectual property practice area. “Jeff’s strong first-chair experience in pharmaceutical and life sciences litigation, including Hatch-Waxman issues, will greatly benefit the firm’s clients both domestically and across our global platform.”

Gargano is one of nearly 95 partners and of counsel the firm has welcomed across its platform since the beginning of 2020, including Seattle privacy partner Whitney McCollum earlier this week.

Michael E. Martinez, managing partner of K&L Gates’ Chicago office, commented: “We are delighted to welcome Jeff to our office and firm. Following the additions of IP partners James Shimota and Patrick Richards and his team to our office last year, Jeff’s arrival helps to further solidify our already-leading IP group in Chicago.”

K&L Gates’ intellectual property litigation and prosecution practices serve clients around the world, protecting critical fundamental client assets, iconic brands, and proprietary information, as well as emerging technologies such as novel drug therapies and cloud services. With litigators on four continents devoted to patent, trademark, copyright, and trade secret litigation, the group handles every scale of dispute, from large, complex multi-jurisdiction matters and bet-your-company confrontations between industry leaders, to litigation involving non-practicing entities, to modest license dispute and piracy matters.
