Philip Verveer Moves to Join Venable’s Regulatory Practice
Summary: The Regulatory Practice at Venable’s Washington D.C. office added a highly-qualified attorney to their team as senior counsel.
Venable LLP was excited to announce the addition of former FCC Senior Counsel and Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Philip Verveer to their team. Verveer will join the firm’s Regulatory Practice in Washington D.C. as senior counsel. With forty years of experience in private practice and federal government regulations, Verveer will prove to be a valuable addition to the firm.
Verveer’s most recent work includes two different roles for the Obama administration. From 2013 to 2017, he served as Senior Counselor to the Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission. He also served as Deputy Assistant Secretary of State and U.S. Coordinator for International Communications and Information Policy, with ambassadorial rank from 2009 to 2013.
Co-Chair Lawrence H. Orton of the firm’s Government Division said, “We’re excited to welcome someone with Phil’s background and experience to our growing Regulatory practice. With a career split between a devotion to public service and private practice, he offers a unique perspective to clients navigating the varying, and often competing, views of multiple stakeholders. Verveer started out as counsel at Jenner & Block and with Willkie Farr & Gallagher on their executive committee before moving to the public service sector. His work for the government includes acting as a trial attorney in the Antitrust Division of the Department of Justice, as the Chief of the Cable Television Bureau, and the Common Carrier Bureau, the Broadcast Bureau and the Common Carrier Bureau of the Federal Communications Commission, and as a supervisory attorney in the Bureau of Competition of the Federal Trade Commission.
He earned his J.D. from the University of Chicago Law School and his B.S.F.S. from Georgetown University. He also served as a captain in military intelligence for the U.S. Army.
