Purdon will open a new office for Robins Kaplan in Bismarck and Johnson will open a new office in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
On Wednesday, Purdon said, "Brendan and I are going to work together."
This comment was made the same day Johnson said he would resign on March 11. Purdon will resign on March 12.
Purdon is a former partner at Vogel Law Firm in Bismarck and Johnson is a former partner at Johnson, Heidepriem, Janklow, Abdallah and Johnson.
Johnson said the following when announcing his resignation:
"It's a job I've loved and has been a really important part of my life," Johnson said. "I think the work we've done has made a difference in people's lives and I'm really proud of that."
Purdon told The Associated Press, "Working closely with Brendan over the past five years on Indian Country public safety issues has been the highlight of my professional life. As we discussed our futures, the possibility of continuing our partnership in the private sector was something we wanted to do and we worked hard to make it happen."
