Baker & McKenzie
to do Pro Bono Work to Help Developing Countries Access Crucial Technology

Law firm Baker & McKenzie will be part of a new initiative by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office to help companies use their intellectual property in assisting developing countries.

The project will primarily be run by Berkeley based nonprofit Global Access in Action. The main focus will be on accelerating future patent application, patent appeals and patent reexamination. As of now, it takes years to do all three processes and this new initiative is the first to offer the prize of accelerated action on appeals and reexams. It will also be the first time that the uses of technology will be taken into primary consideration rather than the technology itself.

Baker & McKenzie will assist Global Access in Action in developing training programs for corporate legal departments and help them spread awareness of the program and its purpose.
