Baker McKenzie Continues Antitrust Practice Expansion with Addition of Senior FTC Lawyer Nandu Machiraju

Global law firm Baker McKenzie has added senior US Federal Trade Commission lawyer Nandu Machiraju to its Antitrust & Competition Practice in Washington, DC as the Firm continues to expand its market-leading antitrust and competition capabilities. Nandu is the eighth addition to the Firm's North America antitrust team in the last six months.

Nandu joins Baker McKenzie as Counsel after seven years at the FTC, where he had a leading role in significant cases, investigations, policy, and leadership decisions. He also brings extensive antitrust merger, investigative and litigation experience. Nandu most recently served in the Litigation Group of the Bureau of Competition, where he held leading roles in significant investigations and litigations.

Previously, Nandu was attorney advisor to FTC Chairman Joseph J. Simons. He advised the Chairman on several significant investigations, enforcement matters, and FTC administrative decisions involving intellectual property settlements and anticompetitive licensing requirements. He played a leading role in supervising the agency's competition mission, including managing the agency’s transition into a government shutdown and global pandemic, working to tighten the agency’s expert expenditures, and helping to implement key elements of the FTC’s public Hearings on Competition and Consumer Protection in the 21st Century. He also advised the Chairman on policy positions in several competition areas. Before joining the Chairman’s Office, Nandu investigated mergers in several industries including pharmaceuticals, medical devices, and retail pharmacies and led a merger enforcement action in the cement industry.

Prior to the FTC, Nandu worked in the Washington and Brussels offices of another global law firm. Nandu also is the President of the South Asian Bar Association for Washington, DC, where he oversees a significant number of professional development opportunities, networking, substantive programming, and public interest and racial justice initiatives.

“Nandu brings a wealth of antitrust expertise from his time at the FTC on merger, litigation and policy issues,” said Mark Hamer, Global Chair of Baker McKenzie's Antitrust & Competition Practice. “In this era of rising global antitrust enforcement, Nandu’s insights and experience will add tremendous value to our growing team.”

Baker McKenzie's Antitrust & Competition practice is the largest in the world with more than 300 practitioners across 60 offices and 43 countries. The practice is consistently recognized as a global leader. It is ranked Band 2 in Chambers Global for 2022 and as the No. 5 Global Elite firm in Global Competition Review's 2022 list of premier competition practices, and was also rated by GCR as the No. 1 Cartels practice in the world. With the addition of Nandu, the US practice will have more than tripled in the last three years.

“Our practice leads the market in helping companies navigate antitrust risk as well as deal with their most high-profile matters, and Nandu arrives with senior-level government experience that our clients deeply value," said Creighton Macy, Chair of Baker McKenzie's North America Antitrust & Competition Practice. "Having worked with Nandu earlier in my career, and known him for many years, I am thrilled to collaborate with him again and have a top practitioner like him join our leading team."

Peter Tomczak, Chair of the Firm's North America Litigation and Government Enforcement practice, added, “We are excited about Nandu joining us, and the expertise he adds to our talented antitrust team. Our clients will benefit from his deep experience in the key issues that matter most to them in light of recent antitrust enforcement focus and regulatory trends, here in the United States and internationally."

"I look forward to working with my new colleagues and joining a premier antitrust and competition practice," Nandu said. "Baker McKenzie's reputation in antitrust is well known throughout the world, and I'm excited to join this talented team."
