Shumaker Reinforces Labor, Employment and Benefits Service Line and Corporate, Tax and Transactions Service Line with Addition of Clayton R. Williams

Shumaker announced the addition of Clayton “Clay” Williams as a partner in its Charlotte office. Clay becomes a member of the firm’s nationwide Labor, Employment and Benefits Service Line and Corporate, Tax and Transactions Service Line, bringing with him a wide-reaching background and more than a decade of experience.

“We are excited to have Clay join our team as Shumaker continues its growth in our Charlotte market,” shared Charlotte and Greenville Managing Partner Steven Meckler. “Clay’s background in ERISA/Benefits enhances an already strong practice area for us and solidifies Shumaker as a leader in this field.”

Clay brings a practical and solution-driven focus when addressing client concerns. His extensive background and practicality allow him to see the broader issues at hand whether he is helping a client structure compensation and benefit plans, or resolving plan compliance issues.

Clay excels at being a warm and practical advisor that regularly helps businesses and their human resources professionals navigate these waters. This approach proves crucial when these same employers require assistance with corporate transactions, ensuring that the benefits aspects of a deal are both compliant and appropriate for all involved.

After graduating from Georgetown Law with his J.D. and LL.M. in Taxation, Clay spent several years in the Washington, D.C. area where he served on the City Council of Hyattsville, MD. Now back in Charlotte, he spends his time with his family and assisting with more Cub Scout activities than he expected. Clay also serves on the Board of The Learning Collaborative, a nonprofit located in Grier Heights that prepares underserved children and their families for success in school by providing a tuition-free, high-quality preschool education.
