Haynes Boone Hires Leading Patent Lawyer Vincent Shier

Vincent Shier has joined Haynes and Boone, LLP as a Washington, D.C.-based partner in the firm’s Patent Prosecution Practice.

Vince holds a doctorate degree in biological chemistry and has practiced intellectual property law for more than two decades, preparing and prosecuting patent applications, counseling clients in strategic IP considerations, and representing clients in post-grant proceedings at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO.)

Drawing from his cross-discipline education, Vince’s practice focuses on representing clients in the biotechnology, life sciences, and pharmaceutical fields, as well as many chemical disciplines.  These technologies include genetics, molecular biology, therapeutic methods, pharmaceuticals, DNA microarray technology, diagnostics, plants, food products, renewable energies, batteries, plastics, surface materials, minerals and mineral applications, along with an array of other chemical products and processes.

“We’re very excited to have a lawyer with Vince’s technical skills and experience join our collaborative Life Sciences practice and our Precision Medicine and Digital Health industry team, both of which we will continue growing by attracting and developing additional high-quality talent,” said Haynes Boone Partner Jeffrey Wolfson, chair of the Patent Prosecution Group. “The COVID-19 Pandemic has underscored the importance of biotech patents and the related need for companies to work with cutting-edge counsel like Vince who can help them anticipate and quickly address legal challenges.”

In addition to counselling clients, Vince lectures throughout the world on the evolving standards of obviousness, written description standards, and patent-eligible subject matter. He also is an adjunct professor, teaching patent law at the Antonin Scalia Law School at George Mason University. He most recently was a partner at international IP boutique Oblon, McClelland, Maier & Neustadt, LLP.

“I am excited to join Haynes Boone, which not only has a leading IP Practice but also a broad range of complementary corporate and litigation services in the U.S. and internationally,” Vince said. “I was equally enticed by the firm’s collegial, collaborative culture. Haynes Boone offers the ideal platform to provide biotech and life sciences companies premium, full-service support from a collaborative team with the right expertise.”
