Former DDTC Senior Policy Advisor Christopher Stagg Joins Miller & Chevalier

Miller & Chevalier Chartered is excited to announce that Christopher Stagg has joined the firm as Counsel in the International Department. Prior to joining Miller & Chevalier, Stagg handled complex issues involving export controls, economic sanctions, and matters before the Committee on Foreign Investments in the United States (CFIUS) at his own firm. Stagg also served as a Senior Policy Advisor with the Directorate of Defense Trade Controls (DDTC) at the U.S. Department of State where he was the deputy lead in re-writing the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and Export Administration Regulations (EAR), including the revisions to the U.S. Munitions List and Commerce Control List.

"I am excited to join Miller & Chevalier and its highly distinguished export controls and national security practices, and to help clients navigate these increasingly complex and opaque regulatory areas," Stagg said. "I have worked for years with Timothy O'Toole through the American Bar Association, and his experience and reputation are unparalleled. In addition, with Brian Fleming's experience in prosecuting export control cases while at the Justice Department, and my experience in writing export control laws at the State Department, Miller & Chevalier can offer clients special and unique perspective into the ITAR and export controls that demystifies these complex areas and anticipates the government's perspective."

"We're thrilled to have Chris, with his unique mix of government and private sector experience, join our growing practice group," said Brian Fleming, Member and Practice Co-Lead in Miller & Chevalier's Economic Sanctions & Export Controls Practice. "As a distinguished alum of DDTC, and someone who has counseled companies in the defense and technology sectors for many years on the most complex export controls issues, Chris adds a depth of knowledge and expertise that is hard to find and will add tremendous value for our clients."

At Miller & Chevalier, Stagg will continue to focus on export controls, economic sanctions, and foreign direct investment, as well as other national security related matters. Stagg earned a J.D. from the Saint Louis University School of Law and a B.A. from George Washington University.
