Nixon Peabody continues to expand its Cooperatives & Condominiums team in New York City with the arrival of Laura Sugarman

Nixon Peabody is pleased to announce the arrival of Laura Sugarman as a partner in the firm’s Affordable Housing & Real Estate group. Laura will be a key member of the firm’s growing Cooperatives & Condominiums team in New York City, which also recently welcomed department attorney Nichole N. Thomas and paralegal Stephen DuRie.

“Laura’s arrival comes at a time when we are embarking upon unprecedented growth, and I couldn’t be more delighted to have Laura join our dynamic team,” said Erica F. Buckley, leader of Nixon Peabody’s Cooperatives & Condominiums team. “I am confident she will be an asset for our clients in New York City and beyond.”

Laura represents developers, lenders, landlords, and investors in a broad range of commercial real estate transactions. This includes cooperative and condominium conversions, developments, real estate finance, and the acquisitions and sales of commercial, mixed-use, and hospitality properties, both in New York and globally. Laura also works with high-net-worth individuals in the sales and acquisitions of residential apartments in New York City, in addition to representing nonprofit organizations in the sale and financing of assets, commercial leasing, and land use matters.

“Laura brings sought-after experience in the creation of condominiums, including leasehold condominiums, and cooperatives, and represents not-for-profit corporations in the disposition of assets in New York,” said Denise Pursley, leader of Nixon Peabody’s national Affordable Housing & Real Estate group. “She’s known in the industry for her ability to develop creative solutions, and we look forward to introducing her to our clients.”

Laura’s extensive experience includes representing the purchaser of the top portion of New York City’s renowned Crown Building, and she regularly represents developers of condominiums with affordable components before various government agencies, including 160 Madison Avenue and 250 Ashland Place. Globally, Laura has represented the developer of a luxury resort and various lenders for hospitality properties in Anguilla. Laura also represents several family offices, including purchasers, sellers, and lenders of multifamily properties in New York and throughout the country.

She has also advised the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, Lincoln Square Synagogue, and other nonprofit organizations in navigating the attorney general and New York State Supreme Court’s processes to dispose of substantial portions of their assets.

“I am excited to have Laura join our New York City office as we target growth areas in our Affordable Housing & Real Estate practice,” said Ilana Kameros, Nixon Peabody’s New York City office managing partner. “The ongoing growth of our Cooperatives & Condominiums team reflects our firm’s proactive approach, fortifying an existing area of strength.”

Laura attended Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law and earned a BA in History and Journalism from New York University.
