Ballard Spahr Makes Second Merger in a Week

In just one week, Ballard Spahr LLP has made two big mergers. As one of Philadelphia’s most powerful law firms, a second merger will make a big impact on their national presence.
Soon the firm will have over 700 lawyers, up from 550. Their latest addition of 25 lawyers comes from the merger with Levine Sullivan Koch & Schulz in Washington D.C. The firm specializes in media law and First Amendment cases. Some of their clients have included the Washington Post, CNN, and NBC.
CEO Mark S. Stewart of Ballard Spahr said, “This was an opportunity for us to acquire a group of the finest practitioners in an area of the law that’s important to us, and we took it. They are superstars.” Levine Sullivan Koch & Schulz also have offices in Denver and New York.
Ballard Spahr announced their merger with Lindquist & Vennum in Minneapolis last week. The firm, with their 150 lawyers, specializes in corporate Mergers & Acquisitions. They also have offices in Denver, South Dakota, and Sioux Falls.
Stewart said of the timing of the mergers, “It was not an intention that we set out to be a bigger firm. It’s not that we felt our size was an impediment, or clients didn’t think we were impressive enough with only 550 attorneys [before the two mergers]. It was a strategic move to increase the depth of our business practice, and expand into a region of the country where we were not located. It all looked right to us. I don’t see numbers as being the goal. I see the strength of the practice being the goal.”
Ballard Spahr has been actively working to improve their First Amendment practice with the addition of Charles Tobin in June. Tobin is one of the country’s most well-known media lawyers.
