Kirkland & Ellis LLP is making a great effort to strengthen and grow their investment funds regulatory platform by adding valuable members to their team. Former SEC officials Erica Williams and Marian Fowler are joining the law firm in the Washington D.C. office as partners. Williams will be joining the Government, Regulatory & Internal Investigations Practice Group while Fowler will be a part of the Investment Funds Group.

Chairman Jeffrey C. Hammes of the Global Management Executive Committee said, “Erica and Marian are extraordinarily talented lawyers who possess deep institutional knowledge about the SEC and have been leaders in shaping the agency’s work over the past several years, both in the Chairman’s Office and in the Division of Investment Management. They will significantly expand the breadth and depth of the regulatory service available to clients on our rapidly growing investment funds platform.”

Williams previously served as Special Assistant and Associate Counsel to former President Barack Obama. Her role was to advise Obama and the senior advisors on legal and constitutional matters regarding economic policy, financial technology, financial regulation and reform, intellectual property, trade, and data protection and privacy. She also spent 11 years with the U.S. Securities & Exchange Commission as Deputy Chief of Staff for Mary Jo White, Mary Schapiro, and Elisse Walter as well as Enforcement Counsel to Chair Schapiro. She also has experience as Assistant Chief Litigation Counsel for the SEC’s Division of Enforcement Trial Unit. She started out as an associate at Arnold & Porter LLP. She received her J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law and her B.A. from the University of Virginia.

Fowler has served as Senior Special Counsel to the Director of the Division of Investment Management at the SEC, working in the Office of the Director for the last three years. She was also the Senior Counsel in the Investment Company Rulemaking Office. Before joining the SEC, she spent five years with Ropes & Gray LLP as an associate in the investment management group. She earned her J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center, a Master’s from the University of California, Los Angeles, and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Oregon.

Partner Mark Filip of the Government, Regulatory & Internal Investigations Practice Group said, “Adding Erica and Marian builds upon our already exceptional investment funds regulatory group, which has several former SEC regulators including former Director of Enforcement Rob Khuzami, former Director of Investment Management Norm Champ, as well as partners Ken Lench, Bob Pommer, Aaron Schlaphoff and Jamie Walter. Our team is able to provide unique insights into the regulatory process and leverage our premier government investigations and enforcement group in collaboration with our funds platform. It’s a very compelling combination for our clients.”

Partner Norm Champ of the Investment Funds Group added, “The regulatory funds group at Kirkland is pleased to have Erica and Marian join our practice and further strengthen our world class funds regulatory practice. Their superb legal skills will assist our clients in navigating the regulatory environment in the United States.”
