Owens will be a member of the firm's public policy and regulatory affairs practice. He will advise U.S. and Canadian companies on issues involving cross-border commerce.

Owens will also work in the firm's federal, state and local government affairs practice.

Owens said that he was approached by the firm not long after he retired from politics in January of 2014. Owens will work from home at his Plattsburgh residence three weeks each month. He will report to offices in New York City and Albany the rest of the time.

"Most of what I'll be doing with them is Canadian-focused," Owens said. "Because I live an hour from Montreal, I present, I think, the ability to get up into Quebec and eastern Ontario really for a day trip, if you will. I think that benefits all of at least the Northern portion of my old district because it allows me to talk to people about opportunities in the United States with a heavy focus on the old district."

Owens reiterated the fact that he would not take a job as a lobbyist when he spoke with the Press Republican.

"The firm does some lobbying, but that's not what they've asked me to focus on," he said. "They've asked me to focus on, primarily, doing what I'm going to refer to as transactional work ... So, really, trying to go up and meet with businesses in Canada and to be engaged in their trade with the United States."

Owens also said that he will continue working for his old Plattsburgh law firm, Stafford, Owens, Piller, Murname, Kelleher & Trombley, PLLC.

The chair of McKenna Long's International Department, Gordon Griffin, said, "The addition of Congressman Owens further enables our Canada-U.S. practice to provide clients with the strategic insight to operate effectively. Bill's valuable experience serving in Congress and in the private sector will benefit our clients and further strengthen our accomplished federal, New York state and Canada-U.S. practices."

Owens joined Congress in 2009 during a special election to replace former Rep. John N. McHugh. McHugh was nominated by President Barack Obama as Secretary of the Army.
