Seattle-Based Perkins Coie Announces First Washington-Based Managing Partner

Seattle-based international law firm Perkins Coie announced in a press release on Tuesday that the firm had elected John Devaney as its new Managing Partner. Washington Post stressed in their report that Devaney was the first Washington-based Managing Partner of the law firm in its history of 102 years. Devaney has served earlier as the Office Managing Partner of the law firm's D.C. office and also served on the firm's Executive and Management Committees. He will be stepping into the shoes of Bob Giles, who was the chairman of Perkins Coie since 1986, and had already announced his plans to step down from his office, three years ago.

Devaney joined Perkins Coie in 1988 and he focuses his practice on commercial litigation, political law litigation, and communications law. A native of New York, Devaney relocated to Washington, D.C. in 1980 to join law school. He completed his J.D. from The Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law in 1983, and then clerked for the Hon. Justices Gallagher, Pair, Reilly and Yeagley in the District of Columbia Court of Appeals. Before joining Perkins Coie, Devaney worked as a trial attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice, Civil Rights Division.

Commenting on Devaney's election, Bob Giles said, "We are very excited about this new chapter in the firm's life and we all look forward to continued growth and success under John's able leadership.  His enormous talent, energy, and enthusiasm, together with his already deep experience as a leader at the firm, will help us achieve many of the important goals we have set for the firm ...."

On his part, Devaney said, "We are at a very exciting time in the history of Perkins Coie-and the legal profession-and I look forward to continuing Perkins Coie's transformation into a premier national law firm. One of my key initiatives will be to continue our selective growth strategy-in terms of attorney numbers, practices, profits and geographic reach-while remaining true to our commitment to innovation and excellence."

Devaney is well-known for his prowess as a litigator and has represented clients in many proceedings before state and federal courts and before administrative agencies. He has led more than 20 appeals for clients both in administrative appeals before federal district courts and before U.S. Courts of appeals. Some high-profile matters he represented involved issues regarding interpretation of the Telecommunications Act and enforcement of the federal Voting Rights Act.
