Job Overview:

A distinguished law firm located in Detroit, MI, is seeking a seasoned attorney with substantial experience in real estate tax credit transactions. This role focuses on advising clients across the full lifecycle of tax credit financings, particularly in sectors such as renewable energy, affordable housing, and economic development initiatives. The ideal candidate brings deep subject matter knowledge, practical execution experience, and a strong commitment to client service in complex financing structures.

Duties:

  • Provide legal counsel and transactional support related to:

    • New Markets Tax Credits (NMTCs)

    • Historic Rehabilitation Tax Credits (HTCs)

    • Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC)

    • Renewable Energy Tax Credits (RETCs)

    • Opportunity Zone investments

  • Draft, review, and negotiate financing documents for tax credit and related transactions

  • Collaborate with developers, investors, lenders, and government entities on financing structures

  • Guide clients through compliance requirements and regulatory due diligence

  • Advise on entity structuring and partnership/joint venture agreements

  • Coordinate with interdisciplinary legal teams, including real estate, finance, and environmental counsel

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience practicing law, with a primary focus on tax credit finance

  • Demonstrated experience leading complex transactions involving one or more tax credit programs

  • Strong analytical, negotiation, and drafting skills

  • Ability to manage multiple projects and client relationships independently

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school

Certifications:

  • Admission to practice law in at least one U.S. jurisdiction, with the ability to become admitted in Michigan if not already licensed

Skills:

  • Deep knowledge of tax credit structures and associated transactional documentation

  • Proficiency in real estate and finance law as it intersects with public/private investment models

  • Clear, persuasive communication skills in client and counterpart discussions

  • Collaborative mindset with a solutions-oriented approach
