A Raleigh-based law firm is expanding its intellectual property practice and actively seeking a Patent Strategy & Innovation Advisor focusing on software technologies. This role is tailored for professionals with a strong foundation in tech-based patent prosecution and a strategic approach to IP portfolio development. Duties

  • Draft and prosecute patent applications related to software, AI, cloud computing, mobile technologies, and related systems

  • Collaborate with inventors and engineers to transform technical concepts into strong patent filings

  • Conduct patentability, freedom-to-operate, and landscape analyses

  • Contribute to the development and refinement of global IP strategies

  • Liaise with patent examiners and handle office actions at the USPTO

  • Provide tailored guidance to clients on protecting emerging technologies

  • Support team-wide initiatives and mentor junior professionals when needed

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in preparing and prosecuting U.S. patent applications focused on software and digital technologies

  • Registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)

  • Demonstrated ability to interpret complex software architectures and algorithms

  • Excellent analytical, writing, and communication abilities

  • Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively within a team structure

  • Prior experience with clients in sectors such as cybersecurity, AI, networking, and bioinformatics is preferred

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or a closely related discipline

Certifications

  • USPTO Registration Number required

  • Admission to at least one U.S. State Bar (California or Washington preferred)

Skills

  • Deep understanding of software systems and data architectures

  • Strong legal research and drafting skills

  • Detail-oriented with a proactive problem-solving approach

  • Proficiency in navigating USPTO procedures and guidelines

  • Familiarity with global IP prosecution and international filing strategies is a plus
