Job Overview:
A law firm is seeking an experienced Patent Agent to join its national Intellectual Property Department’s Chemical, Biotechnology, and Pharmaceutical Practice Group. The ideal candidate will have at least 3 years of patent counseling experience, including preparation and prosecution of domestic and international patent applications. 

Location:

  • San Diego, CA

Duties:

  • Draft and prosecute domestic and international patent applications in biotechnology and related fields.

  • Prepare and provide patent opinions in biotechnology or similar technologies.

  • Conduct legal research and provide strategic patent-related advice to clients.

  • Collaborate with internal teams to develop intellectual property strategies.

  • Effectively communicate complex technical and legal issues to clients.

Requirements:

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in patent counseling, preparation, and prosecution.

  • Strong legal writing and research abilities.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.

  • Experience in biotechnology, molecular biology, biochemistry, or related fields.

  • Prior experience in preparing patent opinions is preferred.

  • Must be registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO).

Education:

  • PhD in biological sciences (e.g., Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics), Chemistry, or a related field.

Certifications:

  • Must be registered to practice before the USPTO.

Skills:

  • Strong technical knowledge in biotechnology and related fields.

  • Excellent legal writing, research, and communication skills.

  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively with a team.
