Job Overview:
A prestigious law firm is seeking a Tax & Benefits Career Attorney to join its Employee Benefits and Executive Compensation (EBEC) subgroup within the Tax & Benefits practice group. This is an excellent opportunity for an attorney with 2-5 years of experience to play a crucial role in supporting client teams with tax-qualified retirement plans, health and welfare plans, and incentive and compensation matters. The ideal candidate will have strong written and oral communication abilities, a keen interest in the design and administration of employee benefits plans, and the ability to navigate complex legal requirements.

Location:

  • Richmond, VA

Duties:

  • Draft plan documents, amendments, summary plan descriptions, and other participant disclosures.
  • Track year-end amendment requirements and ensure compliance with IRS and DOL regulations.
  • Review and negotiate vendor agreements.
  • Monitor and summarize legislative and regulatory changes affecting employee benefits.
  • Assist with the correction of plan errors, including preparation of related IRS and DOL filings.
  • Support transactional work, including compensation and benefits-related due diligence and related preparation of disclosure schedules.
  • Prepare and review materials for fiduciary committee meetings.
  • Analyze client questions, conduct related research, and draft responses.
  • Contribute to the EBEC practice’s thought leadership, including client alerts and business development efforts.
  • Maintain the group’s knowledge management database of documents and resources.

Requirements:

  • 2-5 years of experience in employee benefits and executive compensation law.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to review, analyze, and apply detailed regulations (e.g., ERISA, Internal Revenue Code).
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and ensure timely compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Prior experience with the design and/or administration of tax-qualified retirement plans, health and welfare plans, and compensation plans is preferred but not required if the candidate demonstrates an ability and interest in learning.
  • Licensed and in good standing in the state in which the candidate practices.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree from an accredited law school.

Certifications:

  • Admission to the bar and in good standing in the state where practicing.

Skills:

  • Strong analytical and research abilities.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication.
  • Detail-oriented and able to manage complex regulatory tasks.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a team and directly with clients.
