A law firm in Washington, DC is seeking a Patent Agent with expertise in Molecular Biology to join its Intellectual Property and Technology Practice Group, specifically the Patent Development and Strategy Subgroup. The ideal candidate should possess transferable skills, a strong academic background from nationally recognized schools, and prior experience in a large or mid-sized law firm. Preferably, the candidate should have a background in life sciences, particularly biotechnology, along with registration with the USPTO and an advanced degree, preferably a PhD, in molecular and cellular biology or similar disciplines (excluding chemistry, medical device, or pharmaceutical sciences). Litigation, opinions, licensing, patent due diligence, and/or trademark experience are preferred. A degree in molecular biology and registration with the USPTO are required.

 

Duties:

  • Conducting patent prosecution activities, including drafting and prosecuting patent applications in the field of molecular biology
  • Collaborating with attorneys to develop patent strategies and portfolios for clients
  • Conducting patentability and freedom-to-operate searches and analyses
  • Providing technical expertise and advice on patent-related matters to clients
  • Assisting with patent litigation, opinions, licensing, and due diligence projects
  • Managing and maintaining patent dockets and deadlines
  • Keeping abreast of developments in patent law and regulations

 

Requirements:

  • 2-5 years of experience in patent prosecution and related activities
  • Strong academic background from nationally recognized schools
  • Background in life sciences, particularly biotechnology
  • Registration with the USPTO
  • Advanced degree, preferably a PhD, in molecular and cellular biology or similar disciplines (excluding chemistry, medical device, or pharmaceutical sciences)
  • Experience in a large or mid-sized law firm is preferred
  • Litigation, opinions, licensing, patent due diligence, and/or trademark experience is preferred

 

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in molecular biology or related field
  • Advanced degree, preferably a PhD, in molecular and cellular biology or similar disciplines

 

Certifications:

Registration with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)

 

Skills:

  • Proficiency in patent prosecution procedures and practices
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team
  • Attention to detail and ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines
