Former Massachusetts Attorney General Martha Coakley Re-Joins Foley Hoag as Co-Chair of the State Attorney General Practice
Coakley’s legal career spans more than 30 years. She previously worked at Foley Hoag from 2015 to 2019, before joining the government affairs team at Juul Labs in 2019. Her experience includes private practice and a succession of high-profile public sector positions, most notably her eight years as the first woman Massachusetts Attorney General, from 2007-2015.

Coakley will serve as Co-Chair of the State Attorney General practice, along with Kevin Conroy, Harlan Levy, and Dean Richlin. Conroy is a former Massachusetts Deputy Attorney General and Richlin is a former Massachusetts First Assistant Attorney General. Levy, a former NY Chief Deputy Attorney General, recently joined Foley Hoag's New York office.
Coakley has substantial experience in civil and criminal litigation in all state and federal courts including the U.S. Supreme Court. She has considerable experience conducting complex investigations and has defended clients before federal grand juries.

Prior to her election as Attorney General, Coakley was elected as the Middlesex County (Massachusetts) District Attorney, serving in that role from 1999 through 2007. She was a prosecutor in the Middlesex DA’s office from 1989 until she was elected District Attorney and served as special attorney with the United States Department of Justice Boston Organized Crime Task Force.
Coakley earned a Bachelor’s Degree in History from Williams College and a Doctor of Law (J.D.) from Boston University School of Law.
