Experienced International Tax and Transactions Lawyer Irina Pisareva Joins Crowell & Moring

Crowell & Moring is expanding its Tax Group in New York with the addition of partner Irina Pisareva, strengthening the firm’s capabilities to advise corporations, joint ventures, partnerships, funds, and venture capital investors on tax aspects of business transactions.

With more than two decades of experience, Pisareva focuses her practice on the tax structuring of cross-border debt and equity transactions, alternative investment funds and investment management companies, and international taxation of securities and private capital. She has in-depth experience working with clients in the financial services, life sciences, and technology industries, as well as with entrepreneurs and emerging companies.

“Irina’s experience adds to our growing transactional practice,” said Glen G. McGorty, managing partner of Crowell & Moring's New York office. “Working with our Corporate Group—including the lawyers who have joined us from Kibbe & Orbe—she will enhance our ability to provide strategic advice on a range of tax issues faced by clients conducting global business and corporate transactions subject to both U.S. and foreign regulations.”

Pisareva regularly advises on tax issues related to structuring of new investment funds, distressed debt and derivative investments, litigation finance, global securities trading, and cross-border transactions, including mergers and acquisitions.

One of the firm’s strategic growth priorities is the continued expansion of its transactional capabilities.

In April, the firm added 24 lawyers from the storied financial services firm Kibbe & Orbe in New York, London, and Washington, D.C.  More recently, executive compensation and employee benefits partner Anthony G. Provenzano, financial restructuring and insolvency partner Rick Hyman, and technology transactions and outsourcing partner Sarvesh Mahajan have joined Crowell & Moring.

That move was a draw for Pisareva. “Crowell & Moring is a firm that is clearly on the move and has a great entrepreneurial culture that I look forward to being a part of,” said Pisareva. “Diversity is also an important factor that drew me to Crowell & Moring. I appreciate how deeply committed the firm is to diversity and inclusion and hope to contribute to the advancement of these efforts.”

Pisareva joins the firm from Sullivan & Worcester LLP. Prior to that, she was in the tax practice at EY, where she served as a lead international tax service partner for private equity, credit, and multi-strategy asset management firms with $2 billion to $300 billion in assets under management. In addition to her tax structuring and transactional practice, Pisareva assisted her clients with mitigating organizational tax risk, optimizing their global effective tax rate, and utilizing digital tools and automation to manage tax costs and improve compliance.

“Irina’s 20 years at EY exposed her to many different types of deals, including mergers and acquisitions, fund formation, and cross-border investments,” said David B. Blair, chair of Crowell & Moring’s Tax Group.  “We are excited to have Irina join the firm and grow our transactional tax bench. Her breadth of experience in different types of transactions will be incredibly valuable to our clients.”
Pisareva earned her law degree from Saint Petersburg State University and her master of laws degree from New York University School of Law. She is on the Private Investment Funds and the Taxation of Business Entities committees of the New York City Bar Association.
