Italian Boutique Absorbed by White & Case
Alberto Morano, a private equity and acquisition finance specialist, and 20 lawyers from his firm, Studio Legale Morano e Associati, will join White & Case's Italian office. Morano and four other lawyers will become partners. Duane Wall, White & Case's Managing Partner believes that it is crucial for a global firm to have a strong presence in Italy. Furthermore, he explained that this is the first of many strategic hires planned for the Italian office. Firm press release, 9/28/04

Jones Day Extends Its Reach to Moscow
Jones Day plans to open what will be its 30th office worldwide. The Moscow office will specialize in cross-border M&A, international capital markets, and finance transactions. Five lawyers will transfer to this office to ease the transition. Russia's recent economic growth precipitated this move. Firm press release, 9/27/04

Vinson & Elkins Wheels and Deals in the Far East
Houston-based Vinson & Elkins has opened an office in Tokyo, making it the firm's fifth international location. Conversely, the Singapore office has been closed. Its Beijing office has been expanded with the addition of three lawyers in recent months. Firm press release, 9/21/04

Millbank Tweed Hadley & McCloy Prepares for Expansion in Tokyo
Millbank Tweed Hadley & McCloy, has transferred a senior partner from Singapore to Tokyo to grow the office. Gary Wigmore has overseen the Singapore office's expansion from 2 to 13 attorneys over the past 10 years, he will now serve the same role in Tokyo. Millbank Tweed was the first international firm to branch out to Tokyo when it did so in 1977. Firm press release, 9/30/04

New York to Increase Score Necessary to Pass Bar Exam
The New York Board of Law Examiners will raise the score necessary to pass the bar gradually over the next three years. Currently, a score of 660 is needed to pass; by 2007, that score will be 675. The current standard, in effect since 1979, needs to be raised to bring it in line with that of surrounding states. New York Law Journal, 9/27/04
