Simpson Thacher opens DC office
New York-based Simpson Thacher & Bartlett has opened an office in Washington, DC. The new office is slated to focus on the firm's antitrust work. This is Simpson Thatcher's fourth domestic office, in addition to branch offices in Los Angeles and Palo Alto, CA. The firm also has international offices in London, Tokyo, and Hong Kong. Legal Week

Thirteen partners leave Coudert for Orrick
Coudert Brothers is losing all the partners in its London and Moscow offices to Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe. Coudert issued a press release last week announcing that the partners--nine in London and four in Moscow--would be leaving within the next month, although it did not specify their destinations. Orrick subsequently issued its own release. Coudert has about 30 associates in its London office and 15 in Moscow. A spokesperson said the firm would be transferring a few lawyers from other cities to these outposts. The Recorder

Gardner Carton gains three attorneys from Michael Best
Gardner Carton & Douglas has added three healthcare lawyers to its Milwaukee office from Michael Best & Friedrich, growing that office, which opened last year, to 10 lawyers. The firm's healthcare practice is considered one of the top 20 in the United States. Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

Shorter firm names a trend?
Howrey Simon Arnold & White has been known informally as Howrey for a while, but now the short name is official. Howrey isn't the first firm to adopt a shorter, institutional name, and it probably won't be the last, as the trend continues. "It's a short name. It's a prominent name. It's a unique name, and we've been really using it prominently for the last five years," said Thomas Miller, the partner in charge of Howrey's office in Houston. "I think it's the way that firms are going to be going from now on. A lot of firms are shortening their names," he said. Texas Lawyer

Troutman Sanders expands by seven
Troutman Sanders has expanded its New York office with seven new attorneys from several firms, including tax attorney Romina Weiss from Skadden Arps Slate Meagher & Flom. The firm opened its New York branch in April with the acquisition of Jenkens & Gilchrist's 91-lawyer office. Firm Press Release

Latham & Watkins adds senior partner
Barry Bryer, a senior corporate partner of Wachtell Lipton Rosen & Katz, is joining the New York office of Latham & Watkins, making him the first Wachtell partner to depart directly to another firm. New York Law Journal

Three attorneys return to McCandish
Richmond, VA-based McCandlish Holton has boosted its immigration practice with the return of three attorneys who left the firm to join Reed Smith in 2003. McCandlish Holton has the largest immigration practice in Richmond, and it is the only Virginia-based firm with offices in China. The Recorder
