Job Overview:
A California-based public interest-focused law firm is seeking a full-time Associate Attorney to support litigation efforts related to environmental and consumer protection laws. This role involves working closely with experienced litigators to enforce state and federal statutes that safeguard natural resources, public health, and environmental quality. The ideal candidate is passionate about environmental justice, highly analytical, and ready to contribute meaningfully to high-impact legal work. This position is based in Oakland, CA, with hybrid and remote work flexibility.

Location:

  • Oakland, CA

Duties:

  • Support litigation under federal and state environmental and public health statutes, including but not limited to:

    • Clean Water Act

    • California Environmental Quality Act

    • Clean Air Act

    • Endangered Species Act

    • Proposition 65

    • Public Trust Doctrine

  • Conduct legal research and draft memoranda, complaints, motions, and briefs

  • Collaborate with attorneys, staff, clients, and expert consultants on case strategy and development

  • Participate in court hearings, oral advocacy, and settlement negotiations

  • Assist in administrative advocacy proceedings when applicable

  • Manage multiple ongoing legal matters in a fast-paced environment

Requirements:

  • Working knowledge of major federal and California environmental laws

  • Strong legal research, writing, and oral advocacy skills

  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple tasks

  • Willingness to travel occasionally within California for site visits, hearings, or meetings

  • Comfortable working both independently and collaboratively in a small firm or virtual office setting

  • Demonstrated interest or experience in public interest or environmental law

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited U.S. law school

Certifications:

  • Active bar membership in good standing in the State of California (or eligibility for prompt admission)

Skills:

  • Critical thinking and problem-solving in complex legal contexts
