A law firm in Detroit is seeking a skilled Tax Associate Attorney to join their team. The ideal candidate will provide counsel on complex federal, state, and local tax matters, assist businesses in various transactions, consult on tax controversies and audits, and possess a strong understanding of accounting, auditing, financial statements, and tax compliance. The candidate should have excellent document drafting and communication skills, hold a JD from an ABA-accredited law school, be licensed (or willing to become licensed) in the State of Michigan, and preferably have an LLM in Taxation or significant experience in a tax department of a CPA. A CPA designation or an undergraduate degree in accounting is also preferred.

 

Duties:

  • Counsel clients on complex federal, state, and local tax matters.
  • Assist businesses in transactions, including choice of entity issues, incentive ownership to employees, capital formation, and cross-border transactions.
  • Consult on tax controversies and audits for individuals and businesses.
  • Understand the complexities of accounting, auditing, financial statements, and tax compliance.
  • Work independently with instruction and supervision from assigning attorneys.
  • Utilize strong document drafting skills.
  • Provide legal advice on tax-related issues.

 

Requirements:

  • 2-7 years of experience providing clients with legal advice in a law firm or accounting firm setting.
  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Licensed (or willing and able to become licensed) and in good standing to practice law in the State of Michigan.
  • LLM in Taxation is strongly preferred and/or significant experience in the tax department of a CPA.
  • CPA designation or undergraduate degree in accounting preferred.

 

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • LLM in Taxation (preferred).

 

Certifications:

  • Licensed to practice law in the State of Michigan.
  • CPA designation or undergraduate degree in accounting (preferred).
