A law firm seeks an associate with 2-5 years of experience to join its growing IP litigation team in Washington, DC. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in patent law, including trial and post-grant proceedings, and will be eager to play an active role in shaping litigation strategy. This role offers opportunities to work on high-stakes cases, collaborate with experienced colleagues, and contribute to strategic decision-making.

Duties:

  • Patent Litigation: Represent clients in U.S. District Court and before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) in patent infringement cases, including post-grant proceedings.
  • Case Analysis & Strategy: Collaborate with senior attorneys on case assessments, develop strategies, and provide input into case direction.
  • Research & Motion Drafting: Conduct legal and factual research related to patent litigation. Draft and file pleadings, dispositive motions, and claim construction briefs.
  • Discovery & Depositions: Manage discovery processes, including depositions and expert witness discovery related to patent infringement, validity, and damages.
  • Pre-Trial & Trial Preparation: Participate in pre-trial motions, hearings, and trial preparations. Represent clients in hearings, depositions, and other litigation matters.
  • Client Interaction: Serve as a key point of contact for clients, communicating developments, and strategies, and providing legal counsel.
  • Collaboration: Work alongside a dynamic team of attorneys and staff to navigate complex patent disputes and deliver innovative legal solutions.

Requirements:

  • 2-5 years of patent litigation experience, with hands-on involvement in U.S. District Court and PTAB matters.
  • Familiarity with all stages of patent litigation, including trial preparation, discovery, and dispositive motions.
  • Experience drafting pleadings, conducting legal research, and providing strategic counsel in patent infringement cases.
  • Strong interpersonal skills for effective communication with clients, opposing counsel, and internal teams.
  • A demonstrated interest and understanding of patent law, with experience in engineering or technology-focused fields being a plus.
  • ITC experience is a plus, but not required.

Education:

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • A bachelor’s or master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a related technical field is preferred.

Certifications:

  • Admission to the State Bar in the jurisdiction where the position is located (or eligible for admission).

Skills:

  • Strong legal writing skills, with the ability to draft clear and persuasive documents.
  • Excellent analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • High level of professionalism and confidence in client and court interactions.
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to handle complex legal issues in patent litigation.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a team environment.
